QBs get too much praise and blame but I love Romo--great analysis. When Romo was a rookie my teenage son pegged him as a future star--either he's smarter than I give hin credit for or he just guessed.

Don't forget that the guy on ES that posted about 12 better QBs being better than Romo is none other than the resident village idiot TR1. Anything he says should be completely ignored.

I don't get some the Romo haters either...but their ranks do seem to be thinning. :)

Nice stats work....yes, he is very good for sure.

I disagree on the quote about if he wins a SB then he is a 1st ballot HOFer...maybe if he wins 3....maybe.

So is Dan Marino a JAG because he never won a ring???

Oh, dear. When your position leads you to agree that Dan Marino is not one of the best quarterbacks to ever play the game, you should reconsider your position.

I understand how fun it is to establish a position and backtrack and argue about it until your face is blue, but sometimes you just have to accept reality -- i.e., your position is completely untenable.

TwoDeep, nothing we say about Romo's performance so far--positive or negative--is going to change it.

What do you think holds more significance--what someone actually did, or what someone else says about it?

Great research DDC

I agree he will be in the top portion of these numbers eventually - but he is not even close to 50 starts.

Where did these numbers come from? How do you have a Top 16 QBs in the season ths year and not include Aaron Rogers? I'm sure he must be there somewhere but I'm not seeing him. If he's not there, then you have the question all the data and possible re-evaluate Romo against the adjusted data.

I don't need to stat sheet to know we have one of the better QB's in the NFL. I'm not one who watches only Cowboys games, I enjoy watching all teams play. I think Romo is as good any one out there, I base that on his individual play not playoff wins or SB those team accomplishments not QB accomplishment. In terms of playing the position Romo is every bit as good as anyone out there. I think very highly on several QB’s in the NFL Romo being one of them. Only exceptions in my view is Peyton Manning who I do think is above all others pretty much because Manning not only plays the position he runs the offense of the Colts

you're probably right it will take more than one...but I think if he continues his current performance for another 4-5 years, with 2 SB, he would definitely be among the greats.

These stats show where he would end up if he played the equivelant of 8 full years:

Of course alot things could change that - injuries, lack of supporting cast, diminishing skills, etc. but it does look positive that he started off so well...of course it does hurt his his career stats that he lost three years sitting on the bench (which I think helped him to be as good as he is now). but we shall see. Right now, I just enjoy watching him play knowing that we will always have a chance to win with him at QB.

If he keeps up this level of play and remains #2 all time in QB rating when he retires (which seems unlikely to me) and wins a Super Bowl, he'll be a first ballot HOFer for sure.

I'm sure a lot of posters will e-shoot me for saying this. But I'd rather have Romo, in today's pass-happy league, than the 90s version of Aikman.

Bear in mind, I'm saying in today's league.

Of course you would. Everyone would if they stopped and thought about it.

Romo is a better QB than Aikman. Aikman would probably even admit this.

Great analysis. Here are a couple of items you could add, given the time and inclination:
  • Performance on 3rd downs. This is partially covered by other stats here but wouldn't hurt to double up.
  • Performance in the red zone. Same as above.
  • Mobility. This is a tough one but would really add something since QB rating doesn't cover it at all. Perhaps # of rushes for first downs or total rushing yards.
  • Fumbles and/or fumbles lost.

Whoa now! I was dispute that big time. How do you measure that? Stats isn't all it's about. When Romo wins a single playoff game we can talk... comparing him to a Aikman who has 3 SB rings ain't even fair.

It's like comparing Favre to Montana... Favre has eye popping numbers all over the place, Montanas 'stats' aren't all that amazing... however, nobody would argue Favre was better than Montana when it came to results.

By the way, the entire team - not just Romo - had the talent in 2007 and the opportunity to not only go to the Super Bowl, but win it.

The team failed.

Romo was on that team.

Just curious, how do you feel about Drew Brees?

Super Bowl rings are virtually meaningless in terms of judging individual skill. Regardless, Montana actually did have "eye popping numbers" for his era. In fact, Montana has a higher career QB rating than Favre.
