Where have all the fullbacks gone?

Cycles............A few years ago people were talking about where are all the TE's.

Great athletes who are FB size in college get moved to LB.

You are right. LBs & FBs have similar size and attitude and with the style of offenses in vogue today the better athletes are moved to LB.

I say turn Bobby Carpenter into a Fullback, or some other spare LB we have...

I would not go as far as some and say that they are obsolete in todays game. A good FB can bring a lot to an offense IMO. A good solid block at the point of attack can really bring a running game to the next level. Not to mention how much they can help in screens and simple passes in the flat. I wish we had one.

Madison Hedgecock is a true FB. Mike Cox in KC is a true fullback and was Choice's FB the 2 years he led the ACC in rushing.

There are full backs out there not as many to choose from since many college teams do not use them. Getting a guy because he plays FB does not make him a good FB capable of playing at this level. For teams who have guys that are quality FB use them because it is hard to find top quality FB.

Really, a 240 lb FB running into a 285 lb DE is a losing situation. I think the increase in 3-4 defense makes a FB obsolete. Imagine Moose trying to take on Ware. You give away 50 pounds to a guy as fast or faster than the FB. FB's can still work against an ILB, but not a DE converted to OLB. Need a big TE or tackle to do that.

I think Moose would still win his fair share, you don't have to lay a guy out just move him in a direction to give the back a lane. If you use good technique along with good leverage you can move people bigger than yourself

Neal is still playing. I saw him the other day but I don't remember the team.
That's the exact reason Neal still has a job at his age doing what he does. No one to replace him. Besides, in a few more years of rule changes there's not going to be any need for contact when they are wearing mini skirts and playing two hand touch football.

Robert Edwards Version 2.0

Dallas played several 3-4 defenses while Moose was on the team and did pretty well. The Saints had a very good 3-4 defense and Dallas was able to run the ball effectively against them in the early 90s. The faced the Giants twice a year and did well against them.

There is always a place for a good fullback. You just have to find the good fullbacks.

I think a young Larry Centers would be great in the current Dallas offense. Decent blocker, okay running the ball and absolutely great as a receiving threat out of the back field.

I thought it was Robert Thomas, but I am trying to forget those days.

Carpenter is afraid of contact, so he would hate the bruisingt that a full back faces. I think that is why he dropped the interception in the Raiders pre-season game. He did not want to get tackled.

Packers drafted a FB out of LSU this year named Quinton Johnson. The guy is a load and is getting major attention from scouts in attendance. Packers have not had a good one since William Henderson was in his prime and this guy looks like the real deal.

That means the Packers will release Hall or Kuhn who also have shown to be pretty good. Dallas may be interested in one of those.

I actually think a Richie anderson type fullback would do good in our system.
