There is no cavalry en route. Not in December. This is what it is. They will continue to struggle running the football and, at times, protecting Bledsoe. The teams remaining on our schedule rank 2nd, 5th, 15th, and 30th vs. the run. Only the Rams will provide a red carpet past the line or scrimmage for us.
Bill can't exactly go in and will these guys up front to start giving our runners the LOS. Doesn't work that way. Whatever help comes our way, begins to make its way here next spring, if at all.
Dallas will not be lining up, going hat on hat, body on body, expecting to make a living out of pounding the football. Not the way we go about it. We can't expect to put eight between the edges and do much damage. In some situations, sure. But not as a staple to this offense. If we continue to do so, the playoffs will be nothing more than a pipe dream. The finale vs. St. Louis will mean about as much to us as it will to them.
I am all for running the football. But we do not have the horses up front to say, "Here we come, now stop us." Few teams do. What many coordinators opt to do now is use the passing game to set up opportunities to run the football. The Giants and Seahawks, for example, will go 3-4 wide, split out tight ends, to get defenders out of the box. As a result, they often run more efficiently than a team running two tight ends in like we do. Seattle has a good offensive line, but even they can't go mano a mano all day.
I could be wrong, but I think we will need to do more of this sort of thing in order to get into January. The defense is certainly good enough, but we need to score some points along the way.
