DLaw was a #2 pick so expectations come with that. If he can't provide 6-10 sacks a season and come close to Spencers level he won't see a second contract. The fact the Cowboys had a high need for a pass rusher after releasing Ware made some think they may have reached for DLaw. I mentioned that Charlie Casserly wasn't that high on DLaw after watching tape of him. That doesn't mean he won't pan out but I do think the Cowboys reached for him. If they thought all that highly of him his rookie year I'm not so sure they would have gone after Hardy and drafted Gregory. They took chances on both those players because they need a pass rush and they didn't have much of a pass rush even when DLaw came back from injury last season.

There is no way in hell the Cowboys pass on Randy Gregory. The kid was just too talented to pass up. Even if Lawrence develops like we think he will that's still only one pass rusher. We needed to establish a rotation of guys who could all get after opposing quarterbacks. You can't just have one guy who can do it.

Some if you guys act like all defensive linemen play the same position, have the same role in the scheme, and therefore should have equal expectations. For instance, people complain constantly about Nick Hayden not getting any pressure on the QB, when in fact, that's not his role. In Marineli's defense, His role is to clog the middle, much like a NT in a 3-4, and neutralize the OL's push in the run game. That's why he's never on the field in passing situations.

Now Lawrence, while he doesn't play the same position, has a similar role. His job is to any down the line, playing "run first". I don't care who is out there, we're never going to see a LDE pick up the same sack numbers as the RDE.

All you need to do is look at the later stages of Sunday 's game. The play's where Lawrence hot some pressure all came when he lined up at RDE. I wouldn't worry about him.

They wouldn't have passed on Gregory but I'm not so sure they would have gone after Hardy with him facing a suspension had they felt real good about DLaw's potential.

When you have a chance to sign one of the premier pass rushers you do it especially when he comes at a bargain. You never really can have too many quality pass rushers.

True, but this was a pass rusher who was bringing some baggage along. It was reported only six teams showed interest in Hardy. The Cowboys knew he was facing a suspension and there would be a backlash signing him. Not so sure they would have gone after him had DLaw made a significant impact last season but it's possible.

Who says so? Some fool that knows it all? Of course you need pass rushers...unless the QB ruins him.

Because their game plan almost beat a much stronger team (in my opinion) on the road. The Cowboys had the largest spread going into week 1, and the Giants came to within 1 point of beating us. They're game plan was spot on, and save some knuckle-headed decision-making in the last 2 minutes of the game, that strategy would have prevailed.

Now, I will grant you that a big contributing factor to the success of their strategy was that we kept shooting ourselves in the foot all night.

Still in all, the reason why I brought up the strategy in the first place was because it was designed to neutralize the pass rush (and did so pretty effectively).

If we look at the glass-half-full however, I am HEARTENED by the fact that the Giants felt compelled to abandon the big play all night in favor of the quick-release, dink-and-dunk stuff. They did this because they were afraid of our pass rush.

When was the last time a team had to design a game plan to avoid our pass rush?

The glass-half-empty side of this coin, however, is that our (potentially) strongest pass rusher is out for a to-be-announced timeframe (I'm waiting for the MRI before we begin sighing a collective breath of relief).

I hope they prove me wrong, but I don't see that fear of our pass rush influencing opposing game plans until after the bye week (which is all the more reason why we really need Demarcus to step up his game over the next few weeks).

They barely moved the ball all game, what strategy was done to perfection? Only TD they scored came from the 1 yard line. They didn't march down the field and score their drive stayed on the 1 yard line haha. Our defense shut them down. ....hence number 9 defense in the league. If their game plan was to not really produce on offense they succeeded with that.
