Which Coordinators would you pick?

So many current Capers supporters were down on him a few years ago. Funny seeing the 180 now.

I'm getting used to the idea of Chryst and Thurman. Because even in the middle of December, I'd be willing to bet all the beer in my fridge that it's going to be those two guys.

I'm surprised that Thurman is mentioned so frequently.

Has he ever coordinated at a major level? At this stage in his career, becoming a DC seems like a strange move.

I think Garrett really needs an experienced defensive coordinator.

I like Capers more than just about any other option.

Other considerations: Kirby Smart, Dean Pees, Vic Fangio, Al Groh

I want Dallas to put together a coaching staff like Baltimore's. Young HC and he is surrounded by experienced coaches.

To me what Dom Capers did last season, his 1st in GreenBay, is about as impressive as it gets. I dont think I have ever seen a 4-3 team transition to a 3-4 with such a great effect as they did last year. Normally it takes a good three years . Not so in Green bay under Dom. In their first year they were VERY GOOD , this season they are flat out dominant. Wouldnt it be nice to see that zone blitz scheme brought to Dallas? The opponent has no clue where the blitzers are coming from until the last second. Under Wade it was.....Hey diddle diddle its Brooking up the middle! And everybody and their dog knew it,..........ahead of time. NOT GOOD.

Why am I seeing the name "Al Groh" pop up? He's another retread defensive coordinator. I'd rather keep Paul Pasqualoni if we're going to make a lateral move to someone like Al Groh.

If some of these firings go thru, there is a good chance that there will be no shortage of proven defensive coordinators looking for work. Heres my NOT SO SHORT list ....

Dom Capers....Rumored to be on a two year deal in Greenbay

Dennis Thurman...Has been excellent wherever he has coached, IS HE READY to make the in game calls?

Marvin Lewis...Rumored to be out the door in Cincy

Jeff Fisher...Rumored to be out the door in Tennessee

Chuck Cecil...Current DC under fisher, if Fisher goes so does he

John Fox....Rumored out the door in Carolina

Leslie Frazier...Current DC and interim head coach In minny, possibility he wont be retained

Mike Singeltary Current head coach In San Fran...rumored out the door

Greg Manusky...Current D.C under Singeltary...If Mike goes Greg Goes...

Then you have Paul P who in no way do I want, same goes for Al Groh

In the end...I still like Capers by a mile.

I'm on the Chryst bandwagon as well ... a younger guy with some enthusiasm.

As for DC ... I'd love to get Capers. We'll just have to wait and see. I agree that this defense needs someone with some experience.

No, it was the Pittsburgh Steelers. They ran a fullback up the middle to start every game.

Art Rooney told the coach to stop it and start the next game with something else. The fans booed.

So there you go. You learned two things you didn't know today. A) That it was the Pittsburgh Steelers who did that. And B) that the original ol' crank owner of the Steelers MEDDLED, which is something we're told NEVER happens in the Steelers organization.

i thought the nfl clarified that there are two tiers of coaches, HC and everyone else. didn't they do this 2 or 3 years ago because of all the bs assistant HC titles added to coordinators? if so, position coaches and o/d coordinators are all the same and considered a lateral move.

I could be wrong, but I don't think that's quite the case. I think as long as you're not named 'assistant head coach', then anything else would be considered a lateral move.

So you could have somebody that has the title of 'O-Line coach/Assistant Head Coach'...a guy that primarily coaches the O-Line, but is also considered the 'Assistant Head Coach.' If another team wanted him to be the O-Coordinator that would be considered a 'lateral move.' The only move that would not be a 'lateral move' is the actual Head Coach position.

Chudzinski is just the TE coach, so he should be able to move to O-Coordinator.

Plus, teams usually won't make a fuss over somebody who is *not* a Coordinator going to another team in a Coordinator role. They may if it's for a team in their division, but otherwise they typically understand that the coach is trying to further his career.

I'd really like to know the 'character issues' with Rivera. I know the Bears didn't have him back, but that's because the Bears are notoriously cheap in paying coaches and Rivera wanted a raise. Lovie Smith at the time he was going to the Super Bowl was one of the lowest paid HC's in the game and it wasn't until the Cowboys were rumored to be interested in Lovie that the Bears begrudgingly paid him more. But they still didn't want to give Rivera a raise and in the end they wound up paying for it as their defense since Rivera left hasn't been the same. Meanwhile, the SD defense is excellent and making Kevin Burnett look like an All-Pro.

Here's a look at Burnett's stats this year:

75 tackles
5 Sacks
5 Passes Defensed
2 INT's
2 Forced Fumbles
1 TD

The more I read... the more disgusted I am with Wade Phillips as HC, what a terrible, pathetic coach he was....

Yep....Never wanted him from the start. Never liked his defense either. I think the Phillips 3-4 is a bunch of ****** smoke and mirrors bush league *********. Always did. There is a GOOD REASON that you never hear of ANY other defense in the NFL using the phillips 3-4 as their base defense besides Wade and Bum. And that reason is not because its Oh so complex and the other guys cant figure it out....LOL, its because long term........It sux and doesnt hold up. REAL defensive co's dont want it because Its unsound. The Phillips 34 is to defense what the mouse davis run and shoot is to offense. A bunch of backyard *********.

Quick...name another 3-4 defense in the NFL, EVER.. not coached by Wade or Bum, that uses the Phillips 34 version as its base defense??? Not happening.....

That rookie with the long hair helped him look pretty good also.

Hayseed, the Chargers have ever since he left.

It's so funny how it's like 2009 didn't even exist.

Yeah, clearly he's done a horrible job since taking over as HC. The offense has been a disgrace.

Dbair why are you always the first to defend Red? Are you part of the Garrett family? It's almost like he can do NO wrong in your eyes.

Chuck Cecil's actually an interesting name I hadn't thought of. Capers would top my list of those options, too. But I'd prefer keeping Coach P to half of those names, and I'm not a fan of keeping Coach P (as DC).

Yes they changed the rules. But can't quite remember exactly how it changed.
A coach could always move no matter what if it was a promotion. Then the Assistent HC title started to protect them. So they changed that if a lateral move, they needed permission to interview.

I'm not sure if it has changed again.

Let's say Red stays as HC, and let's dream and say that Jerry lets Red pick his own coordinators. Who should he pick and why? Somewhat realistic answers.

Long shots:

OC Kubiak
DC Ron Rivera
