We all know that some NFL QBs were known for being able to put fire behind the ball.

Sidebar: In the MLB they can calculate the speed of the ball from the Pitchers hand to the Catcher's glove (sometimes at speeds up to 100 mph)

Which Cowboy QB(s) was/were known for their "zip" on the ball; and approximately how fast would you say the ball travels from QB to receiver.

Things to take into consideration ...

- maximum speed could only be determined in short passes; long passes are too distant to determine optimum speed reached)

- probably better assessed from passes to receivers running routes across the middle

Optional Question #1: Is there such a thing as a QB who throws too hard to his own receivers?

Optional Question #2: Who throws the ball hardest in the NFL (qualify your answer)?

Aikman without a doubt.

I've always believed Aikman to be accurate; but dodn't know he threw the ball extraordinarily harder than most QBs. Do you have anything to qualify that belief?

Yeah, Aikman was more about accuracy then speed which is what I'll take in a QB 10 out of 10 times. I'm a big Penn St fan, Anthony Morelli could fire a football with anyone including the jugs machine but had no instincts and horrible accuracy.

Sad as it is to say, in recent memory Ryan Leaf would probably top that list.

No question about it ...accuracy rules over speed, but what about "strong armed" Roger Staubach ...besides, wasn't Danny White the most accurate of all Cowboy Quarterbacks?

i'd say Troy. His arm was very underrated IMO. He could make all the throws and i remember an absolute bullet he threw in his rookie year to James Dixon i think at WR against the Cards. It went for a 79 yard TD , he threw it on a rope and it got there in a hurry.

Just to be clear, regardless of how far the ball travels through the air, wheather it's a baseball, football or a bullet the fastest that object travels will be directly after it leaves the hand or barrel and slows down from there.

Gary Hogeboom..

I was going to say Hogeboom, Leif, or Jeff George. I think they all threw it harder than Aikman.

Someone really ought to start a thread about the "Myths of Troy Aikman".

Troy had a great arm. It wasn't Favre's or Elway's, but he could sling it with the best of them.

Of all the QBs I saw: Staubach, White, Pelluer, Aikman, Carter, Testeverde, Bledsoe, and Romo...I'd have to say Aikman's was the best.

I won't count guys that weren't considered starters.

Randall Cunninham could heave it 80 yards in the air.

That was the name I was going to use.

Craig Morton, before he ripped up his shoulder, could really hum the ball. He split the webbing between Bob Hayes' fingers with a pass in the '60s.

Drew Bledsoe.

Say what you want about mobility, but the dude had a cannon. And he could put the ball wherever he wanted to.

Aikman was not just accurate, he had a lot of zip on his passes as well.

Morton had a very strong arm but his accuracy was poor compared with Aikman's.

Staubach was like Romo in that he could throw it deep but his passes were lofted rather than zipped. He threw it hard when he needed to though. Meredith was like that too.

Bledsoe had a very strong arm as well and could throw with velocity.

If you are asking who could throw the ball the hardest, I would probably go with Morton or Bledsoe but it doesn't matter how hard you can throw it if you can't get it to where it needs to be, that's why I go with Aikman. He could probably throw it every bit as hard as Morton or Bledsoe but he was concerned more with accuracy than with trying to throw it through a wall.

I'm not sure if this is correct, but I seem to recall a certain Gary Hogeboom being deemed notorious for throwing the ball too fast for receivers to catch.

Fortunately, Jeff George never played for the Cowboys.

i think it was probably bledsoe that threw the ball the hardest. id say yes there is such a thing as throwing too hard, in short routes, it makes it difficult to catch, and you could break your receivers fingers, like favre did a couple of times. the person in the league with the strongest arm right now? maybe carson palmer?
