After seeing years of threads like this, I really think the ones who underrate him are younger fans who only remember his later years after all the injuries when he wasn't that good. If that's all you remember, and if you only looked at his numbers, then yeah, you'd probably think he wasn't that special.

Someone above even said the Garrett Thanksgiving Day win made them wonder if those teams could have done the same things with an average QB. Well, I remember the first time I went to training camp and saw them running drills up close. The difference between the two was incredible. Aikman was just jaw-droppingly good, with unbelievable velocity and pinpoint accuracy. Garrett in contrast floated the ball and still wasn't nearly as accurate. DBs had no chance on the reps Aikman ran, while they almost always made a play on the balls Garrett threw. Garrett truly looked like a high school QB compared to Aikman. It was literally like the difference between Larry Allen and David Arkin.

And that's not even considering the Aikman's incredibly demanding attitude of himself and everyone else. If he threw a pass that was excellent and an easy catch for the WR but that was a foot off from exactly where he wanted it, he was scowling and cursing himself. He'd also yell at the WRs if their routes weren't letter perfect, and he had the command to do so with authority. Of course Garrett never said anything, he just stepped in and did his reps. All anyone talks about on those teams is Irvin's leadership, but after seeing those practices, I think Aikman's demand for perfection was underrated.

Irvin and Aikman both demand perfection. I seen the glory years I KNOW what a super bowl bound team looks like. I know what a legit qb looks like too. People forget Aikman was a dog, and Irvin and Emmit was part of his pack.

I don't see the expectations if perfection from any if the players on the current roster. Aikman demanded that every player perform at his best.

The questions of which one was overrated, and which one of them was not underrated, both have the same answer: none of them.

I loved the way you worded it. :)

Just off the top of my head... I watched him come back to defeat John Elway at Mile High....also beat the Commanders in OT with a play action pass to Rocket Ismail.... he
had some great moments.......but your right, usually we had it in the bag by mid 3rd quarter most games.

That game against Denver was against Tommy Maddox and Shawn Moore. Elway was hurt. But yes it was a comeback. There was a comeback vs Cincy in 94, the Vikings and Giants in 95, Falcons and Ninersin '96, Eagles and Skins in '97. But yeah we mostly dominated in those days.

The era and offense that Aikman was in didn't yield high numbers.

He was a balls to the wall leader, and his accuracy is still the best I've ever seen.

If you think Aikman was overrated, you'll never understand the game of Football.

I'll take the word of Jimmy Johnson over the likes of internet fans who think stats have any significant meaning.

Johnson stated Troy sacrificed his personal stats because of team concept. Jimmy suggested Aikman could have had Marino type numbers, but winning Super Bowls was more important. Just like Johnston sacrificed himself to open lanes for Emmitt.

Aikman had 16 career 4th quarter comebacks and 21 game winning drives.

6 times in 1990 when the team was beginning to turn the corner. 3 times in the 1995 Super Bowl winning year.

I think the thing that hurts Aikman in this debate is that he never really had a career defining, clutch moment.

Aikman's team was usually already dominating and he never really had to orchestrate any kind of thrilling comeback victories.

The guy in my sig lit up the Packers on Thanksgiving which leads me to ALMOST believe that we could have had similar success with a QB lesser than Troy.

Pass to Harper against San Fran in the NFC championship

He was a first ballot hall of famer, and his strongest praise comes from his peers, not fanboys. You're just wrong on this one. And if you watched those games live then I'm betting you were a big Emmitt fan. Those are usually the guys who try to diminish Aikman.

Emmitts my all time favorite Cowboy.

But I love me some Troy also.

Maybe I'm the exception?

None! These three where meant to play together, they each played off of each other. Watching the NFL network all week is killing me. Remembering just how good this team used to be, how dominate this team was! And now, for the last 16 years (except maybe the stint with the TUNA). Always good to look back though.

They should have been referred to as the quintuplets with Jay Novacek being mentioned with them.

That's how it should be. Troy was my favorite but I loved Emmitt and Irvin too. What is wrong with people pitting one against the others?!

The absolute truth of the matter may be that when they lost Novacek everything changed.
