Who do you draft at 27 from this group?

Probably Beasley first although I'm not sure yet.
Michael Bennett second.
Gurley third. He'd be first without the knee.
Perryman fourth. Just a great player who helps a defense in a lot of ways. Normally don't like 43 LB's in the first but this guy is good.
OO would be fifth. I like him but I'm not sure yet how much of an impact he can have. Honestly haven't watched him enough. To be fair, he might rise up this list quite a bit after the combine when it is closer to the draft.

I agree with your order. I see us bringing Ro and DM back so it would be hard to draft Perryman or Gurley.

I like Bennett a lot. How do you draft a 3T that would never start though. I know you play a lot of nickel but I've never seen a team take a backup behind a young starter in one.

The answer to that question is: I don't know.

You have a valid complaint about it. All I know is that Bennett fits Marinelli's defense to a tee and that Marinelli collects DL like chicklets. I also know that no defensive lineman is going to get anywhere close to 100% of the snaps at a spot. Rotation is the name of the game for Rod. Does that mean that Marinelli won't take a DL with a first round pick? I don't think it does but who knows.

As you mention, Crawford and Bennett would likely be the DT's in the nickle and dime defense.

Bennett would rotate with Crawford at the 3-tech spot and in the nickle and dime, they both would be in. I could even see one of them playing DE in some heavy sets on the goal line. That would likely add up to about as many snaps for both of them as Rod would like anyone to have.

So, while you do have a good point about taking a 3-tech in the first, I think Bennett would get a lot of play time in an eight man rotation on Marinelli's DL.

Does that mean they would use a first on him? I have no idea, lol.

I'm actually of the opinion that Orchard, OO, and Bennett are gone by 27. Pass rushers always move up. If a team is looking for a starting caliber 3T you either have to have the #1 pick or target Bennett.

So after those guys are gone you are looking at Flowers or Preston Smith at DE.

I take care of my needs in free agency this draft. Sign Suh or Paea at 1T + Clayborn and Spencer (1-2 year deal to Spencer). At 27 I look at CB, LB, RT, or plain old BPA. No CB's or RT's jump out at me there. Flowers RT will be gone. Is Erving a fit at RT?

With the pass rushers gone I'm tempted to go Paul Dawson there. 3 down linebackers who can cover are a huge asset in this pass happy league. He is a stat sheet stuffer and no chance he makes it to the bottom of 2.

Agree. I have been saying for a while now that they need to try to fill needs in free agency so if the BPA a RB or CB or OT or LB they can just take him and keep putting quality players on this team.

I am not thrilled with the DE's who will probably be there at 27, although that could change closer to the draft.

I really like Dawson as well.

I believe the idea scenario for Marinelli is to have primarily a 3 man rotation at DT with all of them getting near equal snaps. It would be two 3tech and one 1tech. The second 3tech would both rotate with Crawford and would be on the field with Crawford in obvious passing situations.

The defense usually plays in the 60 to 70 snaps range. Let's say it's 66 snaps in a game. That's 132 total snaps available for the 2 DT spots. Divide that by a 3 man rotation and that's 44 snaps per player.

I hear you loud and clear on that. But do they take that 2nd 3T in one. I wouldn't, and I think Bennett will rise to the point we don't have a chance to.

I'm targeting Xavier Cooper in 2nd and I'm probably willing to give up my 5 to move up some to get him. Maybe my 4.

I can see a situation where they might take Bennett there; although, they would probably trade down.

Cooper has interesting upside. He's a little raw in some areas but I like him. I also like the game footage of Gabe Wright.

I really like Gabe Wright. I have been trying to smuggle him on the Cowboys in the 4th in all the mocks I've done, lol.

He would be a very nice non-first round 3-tech for Marinelli if it works out that way. He could be a real nice player in our scheme.

I don't like player like Wright at all. Minimal production and game changing plays in my view. He pulls a Terrance Willimas multiple times for huge chunks of the season. If you aren't going to get to the QB then impact the game in other ways. TFL's, FF's, etc. Consistently wired to blockers. Never been 1st or 2nd team All SEC by coaches or media. That's a red flag. I wouldn't use anything more than a 4-5 on him and better can be found in 4.
