If they pull the trigger on carpenter, I sure hope burnett is healthy. Or we are going to be chasing inside linebackers.

That was my first reaction as well...unless they think George's play last week wasn't a fluke...and that he could play inside. Scary proposition.

Guys who we could potentially trade include,

Carp
Hannah
Curtis
Ball
Oglesby

Personally, I like both Curtis and Hannah at TE.

I would really hate to lose Ogelsby, he has really showed something this summer. I trust Curtis more than Hannah - after all everytime he catches the ball it's 6! ;)

I don't see Carp being traded for less than a first, or a receiver that has some serious upside potential. Carpenter would be starting on just about any other team in the NFL and he has shown enough to be worth more than a WR who has struggled thus far in Pre-Season. Just because fan perception is that he is a bust, does not neccesarily mean that he is percieved that way across the NFL as well.

I understand wishing we could get a first back for Carp, but there's no way a team would unload a 2nd rounder for him, much less a first. I'd practically be dancing if we got a 3rd for him at this point.

The Carpenter-for-Wilford idea isn't bad. I just would worry a little that all of our inside-linebacker backup help would essentially be in Miami. We have two injury prone guys in Burnett and Thomas. Of course, if our staff doesn't like Carpenter, then he's really no help anyway.

What's the book on Wilford anyway? Stats indicate he's a mediocre starter, but maybe an upgrade at the No. 3 position?

560 WQAM in Miami is reporting (unconfirmed at this point) there's a possibility Dallas and Miami are trading Bobby Carpenter for Ernest Wilford. Reports are that a deal is in the works. Wilford is a WR (6-5, 218) who Miami acquired from Jacksonville this summer and has so far been somewhat inconsistent in Miami's training camp.

I would love that trade

Carp is nothing more than a body on the depth chart. he's a below average LB and he's soft.

I wouldn't be shocked if it was a second, but the team holds on to him for anything less than that. I just think that this board seriously undervalues Carpenter because he hasn't lived up to what they think he should have been doing. I am not saying that he has been all-world, I just think that the fans are the only ones who have labeled him a bust.

I wouldn't trade him for Wilford. Our need at WR isn't a dire as some think.

Or so I believe...LOL

I agree. Hannah has some potential, but I don't know if it's enough to trade a guy like Curtis. Besides, what are you going to net, a conditional 7th? We'd have to LOVE Hannah to make this move I think.

Bennett will pass Curtis on the depth chart in no time, but that doesn't mean Curtis isn't a heck of a valuable third tight end. I doubt Hannah ever matches his blocking prowess and, let's be real, third tight ends don't come into the game to flash their playmaking skills, which maybe Hannah might have. Curtis is more valuable in short-yardage and goal-line situations, which is the only time he or Hannah gets in the game.

I've given up on Carpenter ever fulfilling his first-round status. Based on where he was drafted, he should be an impact starter for us. I don't see that happening. But I'm OK with that.

What I want is for him to carve out a niche on this team, kinda like Burnett has. I wanted Burnett to be more productive given his second-round status, but at least he's become a valuable passing-downs guy.

I'm just not convinced Carpenter excels at anything, even special teams. He seems a little hesitant, doesn't explode onto ball carriers. He's the kind of guy that can get eight tackles in a game yet you don't remember a single one.

If Phillips sees Carpenter as a key backup, a guy that can start in a pinch, and a key special teams player, then he has value to us -- even if he is a "bust" by first-round standards. But if Phillips doesn't see him as those things, he really has no place here.

Fair enough, I think that is a fairly accurate assessment, I just feel that many people assume that WP feels that same that they do. Everything we hear out of VR talks about how they like the kid. It is the fan base and the media who are doing most of the talking about what is wrong with him.

Him being soft is exactly what I see wrong with him, he doesn't seem to look to de-cleat anyone and he needs to chew some gun powder or something to make him a lot meaner.

Yeah, I agree with what you're saying. Fans and media certainly don't know everything, and could be missing some of the key "little" things Carpenter does right that makes himself valuable.

At the same time, it's sometimes easy to spot a turd. And no matter the polishing, it's still a turd. Fans and media may be dumb, but are they that dumb? I mean, look at all the people calling for Roy's head in coverage over the years, and despite the people at Valley Ranch spinned it positively, here he is no longer a part of our passing-down packages. Wonder why that is?

With Carpenter, I do wonder if we're hesitant to just outwardly bash him because we're hoping to dump him off somewhere and get something in return. And it would make no sense to publicly say he's a disappointment and then beg a team to throw a third- or- fourth-round pick our way.

Wilford is a servicable WR, but i gotta think there has to be a pick involved from Miami as well for this trade to happen.

and just for the record, has Romo ever threw a pass to Wilford? i didnt think so.

Valid points, and I agree that we can spot turds. I think we are thinking along the same lines, I am just not ready to label him as a bust yet. That isn't because I am holding out hope for him turning a big corner I just think we got what we drafted at the time, a middle of the pack LBer who will be servicable without being outstanding. Did we draft him too high? Of course, but that doesn't matter to me that much either, we do have a talented group of LBer's and I think what really screwed up his progress was not defining his position earlier. I never liked him on the edge and felt he should have been working inside all along.

Agreed. All the position changes bugged me, too.
