Who does Miles Austin remind you of?

Let's not get to ahead of ourselves on this just yet, but i will say he is still raw and the upside is tremendous he has all the tools to succeed.

I don't expect you to see or understand it but it is what it is. There are not too many Miles to establish a baseline for the average fan. However, he has the tools to be one of the greats outside of any major injury, sorry it is not obvious to you.

Sounds like the end of my reply the first time, thanks for the love. But i don't expect you to see or understand my obvious "average fanhood" but that's ok. Keep plugging shooter and Happy New Year:)

The way he runs with the ball. His ability to break tackles and strength for his size. I'd have to say Steve largent.

Steve Largent was a freak at WR - he was little, slow and not super quick (i.e. he was not Wes Welker). He didn't have much ability to RAC.

But he was the consummate pro despite a lack of measurables. He knew how to wrong step CBs to gain separation. He could catch balls with a great pair of hands and had incredible concentration. He would often look up at only the last split second to catch the ball so the defender couldn't key on his eyes to know when to turn around.

I don't think I've ever seen a WR since that really reminded me of Largent.

I'd say the thing that is similar is that they were both not highly sought after with Largent taken in the 4th (despite a highly decorated college football career at Tulsa) and Miles undrafted. Largent was about to be cut in his rookie year but instead was traded from Houston to Seattle for a future 8th round pick - talk about a lopsided trade. With great work ethics both ultimately emerged with Largent making the Pro Bowl in his 3rd year and Austin in his 4th.

I'd love it if he followed Largent's football trajectory: 7 Pro Bowls, HOF, > 13,000 yards, 101 TDs.

I think he actually turns and runs like T.O. He may have picked that up while Owens was here.

Good thought. It appears like he picked up the good parts from Owens game and left the trash behind.

the comparisons that I like which have been thrown out there are:

route running: kind of like Andre Reed in style
fluidity: reminiscent of Rice
RAC: similar ability to TO although I think the style is pure Miles with those cuts, that balance and that body lean
joy: he brings that joy of the game, all those smiles on the field like Hines Ward

I think he's the exact opposite of a waterbug like Welker.

Those types of receivers are small and extremely quick, and use that quickness to cut across the middle from the slot. Austin isn't quick and doesn't cut very well. He's not suited for the slot.

Um, what?

Miles is very quick. That's part of what makes him so good. He gets open FAST. I'd argue the slant is his best route.

You don't get open on slants without being

a) quick

and

b) good at cutting.

Physical receiver. Not overly quick or fast, but great after the catch & breaking through arm tackles.... maybe a taller Anquan Boldin?

I would disagree with the "not overly quick or fast" part. He is very quick off the line to get into his route unlike most WRs his size. Secondly, he has excellent deep speed - not Desean Jackson speed - but he is probably up there amongst the best fast WRs in the league.

He is much smoother than Boldin who plays the game in a more violent and staccato manner. He is also much faster than Boldin.

You're overrating how complicated it is to run a slant. No one gets burnt from a slant because of a good route running ability, it's a route designed to pick up 4-7 yards against a defender playing 7 yards off.

I didn't say it was a difficult route to run. Anyone can do it.

But to run it effectively, you need to possess certain qualities.

Miles gets a quick burst off the line and is good at planting his feet into the ground on slants. That's why he can take those 4-7 yard slants and make them 15+ yard gains.

Anyone who says he's not quick doesn't watch him very closely.

After thinking some more, maybe a shorter Ed McCaffrey.

We will know more after the Eagles game because they will do everything they can to stop him first.

TO. lol. seriously he was like a mentor to all those guys while he was here. He reminds me of to with a little less speed and more strength. No suprise why he reminds you of rice who did to learn from. torch is passed?

This is probably the closest to FACT.

I must say, while I was the biggest TO supporter. He was never a REAL Cowboy. Yeah, I thought he could work his way into being one. Didnt happen, missed opportunites for all on both sites.

I do know this. I never considered getting a TO Jersey... but I will definitely get a Miles Austin Jersey.

The guy has been a TRUE warrior for us. A homegrown playmaker. We are so lucky to have Romo and Austin, undrafted's, on our team.

Jersey #19.... here I come.:D
