Who gets the franchise tag?

Yes, that's my point. From the Cowboys perspective the tag is very expensive for Murray but cheap for Dez.

I think that rb tag price will drop with some high priced vets getting released but it should be a buyers market as far as rbs go and Dez could easily be the most sought out free agent.

The tag is averaged over the past 5 years in the current CBA. In the past, it was just based on 1 year.

I see Dez getting a contract around 12.5 a year with like 27 28 guaranteed for 8-10 years. In my opinion thats not a bad contract

If someone pays Demarco Murray 9 million a year they are off their rocker.

Exactly....there is a potential to have a decent amount of good RBs on the market next year with Murray especially if AP and Beast mode become available. Granted, Murray is probable the jewel of the group, but it should keep prices down somewhat.

Who should the Cowboys DEZignate with the franchise tag next year? I know the players hate the franchise tag, they think it's DEZspicable. That's tough, yet it's how the league DEZigned the pay structure, so deal with it. It's weird how players always seem to have more passion and DEZire for the game in their final contract year, isn't it? It's a tough DEZcision, no doubt.

Huh? What are you, some kind of mind reader?!!!

Cowboys 'won't lose' Dez Bryant, willing to use franchise tag
By Adam Stites

http://www.sbnation.com/nfl/2014/11...dez-bryant-franchise-tag-free-agency-contract

Dez Bryant's
contract expires after the 2014 season and he's scheduled to become a free agent in 2015, but the Dallas Cowboys aren't going to allow that to happen even if it means slapping him with the franchise tag and risking the loss of running back DeMarco Murray.
According to Ian Rapoport of NFL.com, the Cowboys are "far more likely" to give Bryant the franchise tag designation if the team is forced to choose between the receiver and Murray. That is because of the value of the tag between the two positions, as well as an unwillingness to part ways with Bryant, who has developed into one of the NFL's best receivers and a player Dallas "won't lose," per Rapoport.

The "value of the tag" may seem like a counterintuitive concept, since tagged running backs received $9.54 million in 2013, while wide receivers were given $12.312 million. However, the value of the positions has changed in recent years. A three-year deal worth $10.5 million for Toby Gerhart with the Jacksonville Jaguars was the highest contract given to a running back, while multiple receivers were given much more, including Eric Decker, who received a five-year, $36.25 million deal from the New York Jets.

If Bryant reached the free agency market, he would undoubtedly haul in a big contract, considering the Cowboys have already reportedly offered the receiver more than $100 million and were turned down due to a lack of guaranteed money.

Even if the franchise tag number for receivers eclipses $13 million, it is still a mark that isn't outrageous for an elite wide receiver and something the Cowboys would apparently be willing to pay to ensure that their 2010 first-round pick is still on the team in 2015...

if they don't help the team make the playoffs and win in the playoffs then neither one.

Murray is the Jewel if AP is available? In what reality?

Not Dez.

I mean, franchise him and pay him top 5 money for a year, and then what? Let him go? Do it again? What's the point? It's crazy to sign him to a long term deal after franchising him a couple of times.I think they'll sign Dez to a new deal after the season. Besides, giving him top 5 WR money for a year, are they just going to let Murray walk? So Joseph Randle is going to carry the load? Laughable. Franchising Dez and signing Murray long term to a big deal would be about the dumbest thing they could do.

Exactly. Either get the long term deal done or forget about keeping him. Paying him 13m and then 16m would be foolish. Those cap hits can't be massaged and will prevent the team from getting better in the short and long run.

If they pay Dez 29m over the next 2 years there is no going backwards unless he gets hurt like Spencer and we are screwed either way.

Well, Who you want to give the big multi-year contract to? A 30+ year old RB coming off a season where he was inactive because he beat his kid with a stick, and admitted to smoking weed just prior to a court session. or a 27 year RB coming off a record breaking season?

That reality

Tag Dez, try to re-sign Murray or go after Peterson
