Can't they cut Free at any time and designate him as a June 1 cut?

Read the link it gives a full explinantion on the dumb rule. We wouldn't get cap help until June 1. So what's the point in doing it now? Let him go thru OTA's and see where he is at. Also they could be trying to get him to take a paycut

That's my sentiment exactly. Let him stay until we draft a lineman high in the draft then release him june 1 to pay our new rookies.

The one major benefit is that if he gets hurt in OTAs they have to pay him his 7m salary, plus having a dead man walking is not good for morale. I think they either make him take a pay cut or release him before March 12th. They would still save nearly 3m on the cap and have no dead money for next year.

I fully believe they are trying to get him to take a pay cut. I understand what you are saying, but I don't think the team wants to let him go before they have a plan in place. I mean if cutting him doesn't get cap help right away what's the point?

Mickey said yesterday on Talking Cowboys that Spears, Vickers, and Connor were most likely to get cut considering they have large base salaries and very little guaranteed money left on their deals.

The problem with cutting Free is that you would have to name him a June 1st cut and you would get $7 million to use AFTER JUNE 1st, but the cap hit next year is around $6 million.

Thats a heck of alot of money for a player that would not even be on your roster next year. Bottom line is that the organization screwed up big on this contract and there is no easy way out of it.

That is why I think you hear all the talk of moving him to another postion to see if there is any way to salvage the guy before taking a monster cap hit.

Has anyone heard anything about Felix? Is he going to be here or not? I got a gut feeling he stays.......

Felix is an UFA and will test the market come March 12th.

If nobody offers him much, I could see him resigning with us for backup money.

Why not just trade Free for a late round pick? Wouldn't we be off the hook for this year's salary and take on no dead money for the future?

He is a FA so if he stays both sides would have to come to an agreement. He is still young and if healthy and he has his speed back I don't see a problem with it at all. The problem for Felix is the injury and it didn't help him to be able to get into shape before camp last year, and it hurt his speed. So like I said if he is healthy and has been training hard and the speed is back I don't see why not. Unless the staff really wants to get an every down back. I just don't see Demarco being that guy. So we will see what they do in the draft.

Because he is an UFA.

Doesnt work like that.

Even if you trade the guy, you still have to account for the unprorated portion of the guaranteed money left on the contract. It all accelerates into this years cap, would actually be cheaper to keep Free in that scenario.

Cutting him today would save almost 3m on the cap and leave no dead money for next year. If they designate a June 1st cut, they would save 7m, but not until June 2nd and there would be 4.15m in dead money next year.

That's not bad. I could live with that.

With the carry forward rules it does not really matter if you have the dead money next year because you will have a larger credit from the prior year.
