The only rule for this thread is that your player cannot currently be playing. My pick is Darren Woodson simply because he represents the character of the sort of player I idol as a fan of the Cowboys. It's really that simple. He was the most entertaining player I've ever watched, and was not only a great talent but a great character as well.

I think we need someone; a little more fired up like Darren, a little less selfish when it comes to the team, and a little more subtle when it comes to being outspoken. Not to mention, we need aggressive players.

I think D.W. represents that kind of player more than any other I've witnessed. And although I love our safties, not even "The Great" Roy Williams can replace him.

Aikman. He handled the personalities around him like nothing was going on and was the consumate field general.

This will probably not be agreed with by many but I would say Lee Roy Jordan. We have never had another leader on defense like him and he was the key to the "Flex" defense that Landry ran.

Id probably say Emmitt, without Emmitt I dont think Dallas beats those 90s 49er teams or wins those Super Bowls.

Bob "Mr. Cowboy" Lilly. The greatness begins with him and rightfully so.

Staubach.

No Captain America would have meant no America's Team.

Emmitt Smith. He was the best player on the best teams in Cowboys history, possibly NFL history.

Herschel Walker (Trade). No single player has done as much to turn our team into a dynasty. Dallas used Minny's picks for Emmitt and Darren Woodson.

Emmitt. If I recall correctly, the Cowboy's lost most games where he was out injured.

Did I miss the point of this thread?

I thought it was the guy we have never replaced (or not completely), not who was most valuable to the team at the time they played, and therefore irreplaceable.

Which is it?

I'll have to 2nd this. In most cases QB is the irreplacable part. For those championship teams it was Emmitt.

Those were great teams in many areas. However, the one quality they had that I believe truely set them apart from every other good to great team of that era was our running effeciency.

We had a balanced offense for sure. But our running game was the key.
No team could run the ball as consistently for tough yards while still maintaining a serious break away threat on every carry.
No other team ran the ball as often or effectively on third down as we did. Not just short yardage situations. 3rd and 3 to 7 yards was a obvious passing situation for every other team. Not us, we ran the ball often and effectively in those spots.
That set us apart form every team and Emmitt was the key.

Very easy question. Without a doubt, Roger Staubach. During the 1970's, which is when the Cowboys claimed the status as THE franchise in the NFL, Staubach simply WAS the Dallas Cowboys. Behind him I'd say Emmitt Smith.

Emmitt by a long long shot. How could u possibly think different? This guy gave us 3 rings basically.

Lilly,Staubach,etc... were all great but c'mon guys. We had the best RB ever to play the game.
