Offense:

QB: Montana
RB: Earl Campbell
FB: Moose Johnston
WR: Jerry Rice
WR: Michael Irvin
TE: Kellen Winslow
LT: A. Munoz
LG: John Hannah
C: Ray Donaldson
RG: Larry Allen
RT: Erik Williams

I didn't pick an "all-star" team but decided to try to put together a team that would have an identity. I want a power running game that wills teams into submission and can also pass with efficiency. I have a power running line that can open some holes. I was tempted to go with Jim Brown as running back, but decided to just stick with guys that I saw during my era. Emmitt Smith would also be a great pick, but during his prime Campbell was big fast and strong would have been a terror running behind this line. Ray Donaldson I know is an odd choice, but I remember the one year he was with us we could really help open some holes and I think he is a good center to have on a power running team.

Jerry Rice is an easy pick obviously. I picked Irvin because if it's 3rd and 8, there is no receiver I'd rather have on the field. Irvin would be great in any system and IMO is still not truly appreciated.

I was tempted to go with Elway or Aikman or Staubach, but I can't go wrong with Mr. clutch Montana.

Defense:

DE: Reggie White
DT: Joe Greene
DT: Pat Williams
DE: Harvey Martin

OLB: Derrick Brooks
MLB: Mike Singletary
OLB: Ray Lewis

CB: Deion Sanders
DB: Mike Haynes
SS: Ronnie Lott
FS: Ed Reed

My thinking on defense is I want a really stout line that can plug up the running game and yet also rush the passer without blitzing. I think I have that. Harvey Martin is a homer pick, but I picked him because I think he's underappreciated. To complement my line, I want linebackers who are quick and can run and make tackles because my front four should tie things up pretty well. I won't be asking my LB's to rush the passer much, so I didn't pick them on that basis.

For fun I also picked a 3-4 front seven. I would be very happy with this group as well. DeMarcus Ware is another home pick, but I like the fact that he's very versatile and can drop back into coverage pecause LT will be rushing a lot.

3-4 defense

DE: Richard Seymour
NT: Casey Hampton
DE: Reggie White

OLB: Lawrence Taylor
OLB: DeMarcus Ware
ILB: Harry Carson
ILB: Ted Bruschi

same secondary

I actually would take Irvin over Carter, I just couldn't bring myself to do it.

Elway on any team in history and the other guy sits the bench. He is the protoype.

We'll have to agree to disagree on the GOAT QB.

The way I see it, Elway is prob the best ever at taking an average team to its highest highs. The weaker my team, the more value Elway has to me.

As far as a good to great team, I'll take Montana.
Not only with great talent, but facing great talent.
That's where Montana stands alone.

I can make an argument for Montana, Staubach, Marino, or Favre. Maybe even Peyton Manning if he keeps it up. I just think if all are in their prime on the same team, Elway is the starter. Like I said, he is the prototype.

I got Brady as the best QB....3 rings with very little receivers is special, Peyton has 2 superstars to throw to, Brady has never had a superstar (Branch was average - the other crap receivers on the Pats roster just made him look better than he really was).

He wouldn't even make my top 10.

fair enough....he is my #1 by a long way.
Kids.

3 time winners, I'd take Aikman over him any day of the week and twice on game days.

Note: I am not insulting him or saying he is bad. #1 ever? No way on this earth. I don't think he's #1 right now.

LT is the best rb ever?

come on, he had a couple great years, but all time? too soon for that

I would take emmitt over lt simple because of his heart, and his willingness to play hurt and do whatever to help the team win. Emmitt could outblock LT any day of the week.

Had a couple of great years???

He hasn't had a bad year yet stealth?

He will soon be the greatest if he doesn't get a career threatening injury.

But I do agree with your last sentence... Emmitt could block big time.

Hey, someone actually "GOT" the idea and built a team that could play together. I like your idea of building a power-running team and Campbell behind Moose would definitely be POWER RUNNING! Ray Donaldson at Center is a very good choice for that style. I had Dermotti Dawson on my team originally but switched him for Stepnoski, because I am running a balanced attack with deep passes and needed better pass protection.

I don't know how effective Pat Williams would be as a 4-3 DT but as a 3-4 NT he is outstanding. You might run a modified 4-3 and still use him as a NT and have what would amount to 3 DEs as Greene was pretty quick for a DT.

Nicely done. :starspin

Thanks.

I was trying to think of good centers that would fit and forgot about Dawson. He would have been an excellent choice as well.

Pat Williams has played the past two years with the vikings next to Kevin Williams at DT and has been quite effective. There would be a number of guys I could use there. I wanted somebody with good size who could clog things up. Guys like Siragusa and Sam Adams would work as well. I happen to live in Vikings country and Pat Williams was probably their MVP last year.

I would love to put in a guy like Bob Lilly of course, but I just stuck to guys that I saw (not just on NFL films) Randy White was excellent as well but wasn't quite the right size to be the middle clogger like I was looking for.

I wonder what kind of ILB White could have been in the 3-4. Oh well, no matter, he was a pretty darn good DT the way it went.

Well, White started out as a MLB so I would think he would make a pretty darn good one. We selected him in the 1st round in 1975 out of Maryland as a LB and didn't move him to DT until part way into the season.

He played at 245 for the first few years before bulking up to 265 for the last part. He could have easily played ILB at 250-ish and been very effective.

With a name like "dallasfan" you pick Richard Seymour and Warren Sapp over Randy White? Probably an oversight.

I like the choice of Junior Seau.

To be honest, it's hard for me to pick players I've never seen play. Guys like Jim Brown, LT and a few others are no brainers, but since I'm 22, I know who Randy White is, just not sure how great he is.

Take it from someone who has watched football since the early 60s, Randy White is among the top-5 DTs to ever play the game.

My list would be:
1. Bob Lilly
2. Joe Greene
3. Merlin Olsen
4. Randy White
5. Alan Page

Ernie Stautner was an amazing player and a great assistant coach for the Cowboys for many years. He played on some pretty mediocre Steelers teams in the 50s & early 60s but was still a star in the league and is in the HoF. That's hard to do playing for a lousy team and at a position that didn't get a lot of exposure back then. I would probably rank him slightly ahead of Page but the list I gave is of the guys I got to see play. I saw him in his last couple of seasons but I saw the other guys throughout their entire careers.

You can pick a team of guys you got to see play. There's no wrong way to pick a team, just go with the guys you think would make the best team.

You've got some real old timers in there. Very cool! Halas at WR would interesting. I can't help but see him as I remember him, old and crusty. Funny thought to picture him running down the field like that. :laugh2: Obviously you meant when he was young but I can't picture him that way.

Grange and Nagurski are good picks too. You have a nice mix of different eras represented there. Good job.
