People on here are some of the most informed sports fans, so I'd really be curious to know who all you would suggest and why? (as opposed to some lame reporter). I'm pretty ignorant on the subject.

I would love to get a guy with a title on his resume as the head coach, but don't know if any viable ones are available after Urban got his job. Are there any big, flashy names - to help with recruiting, establish the program, etc...

Thanks

It's gonna be tough. A&M will need an SEC level defense in order to compete. If they hire the right guy, they could be like an Auburn, who has a solid team and is one "mega superstar recruit" from being national title contenders. But if they hire the wrong guy, expect for them to be cellar dwellers.

A and M struggles to compete in the Big 12 ... Unless they get a super ground breaking coach (like Jackie Sherril, etc) i think they will be perenial cellar dwellers in the SEC. Fodder for the likes of LSU, Alabama and Arkansas.

Larry Fedora would've been a good candidate if they were staying in the Big XII but with the SEC move, they need someone who is familiar with the conference. I'd go with Charlie Strong

Charlie is the current HC of Louisville and rumor is they might be heading to the Big 12.

Anybody but that coach from UH.. I heard he sucks. ;)

If he does leave...I hope it is for a school a little better than ASU.

Oh...also hoping Keenum gets the Heisman.

Sending UH plenty of love today. :laugh2:

Right now, he's in the best possible position for a coach to be in. There's an article in the Chronicle that detailed how good a position. I almost cried. lol

He's the hottest thing going. Every year since he's been the coach, his name comes up as a possible candidate in the coaching carousel. This year is the first year, I'm officially concerned he might leave.

My only hope is that his family likes Houston enough to stay and that none of the other schools really beat his situation this year...and of course, Houston steps up to the money plate.

BTW, I got tix to go to the conference championship tomorrow. My trainer is an old QB for UH and he knew somebody who knew somebody. So I'm going. I'm really excited.

If they do move, it wouldn't be until after the dust clears from WVU and TCU moving and they decide to add more teams to make it 12. If A&M offers him that job, he'd be crazy not to take it.

They are are already in. It will be made official in probably February.
Check out Greg Swain of Big Time Sports. He is a tremendous source of info on this big 12 stuff.

There will be 12 again before the next tv contracts are redone in 2014. Louisville is certain, the 12th is in question with Rutgers, USF, Cincy, BYU all possibilities and probably in that order.

BYU could move up the list if they dropped a lot of the LDS demands.

Anyone who likes the guy should hope he doesnt take the Aggie gig. That is goign to be one tough nut to crack going to the SEC. Long ways from having Case Keenum and playing C-USA to playing an SEC West schedule with a new QB.

Sumlin and Smart sound like good candidates to me. Sumlin should have recruiting roots already down, and Smart could recruit the whole South.

Not sure about Smart as a HC candidate, though. Don't know that much about him, really.

I've always said, and still think, that A&M is a sleeping giant. All they need is the right coach.

That Aggie gig is looking more and more like a setup for a career killer. Whoever takes that job has to be outstanding and able to recruit with the likes of Nick Saban and Les Miles.

Personally, I'd love Kevin Sumlin, Kirby Smart or Charlie Strong. Sumlin and Strong appear to be the favorites right now. Aside from the fact that both are great coaches IMO and solid recruiters with big conference experience as coordinators, A&M could really use a new identity as many other coaches negatively recruit us with the "conservative white farm school" schtick, and as shallow as it may seem a fiery African-American coach could really help our program's image in the eyes of the media and recruits. I remember we were sluaghtered when we hired Sherman with interviewing a black coach.

Honestly, the best guy for TAM would be Muschamp but that's unrealistic. If you could get him, he would be the ideal choice. He could recruit in either Texas or the SEC. He's as good a defensive mind as there is in college football and he is young enough to still have star quality. Never happen but he would be the guy if you could have anybody.

I'll tell you who would be a good idea for you, thou I doubt he would be considered.

Jim Tressel would be a high profile guy that TAM would not normally have a chance to hire IMO but because of the situation with Ohio State, he would probably jump at the chance to coach for the Aggies and he is a good enough coach to be able to put together a heck of a staff and compete in the SEC with the best. You figure Meyer is going to pick his staff at OSU so there are going to be some quality assistance that Tressel knows and who know Tressel and his system, looking for work.

Another guy you could think about would be Spurrier. I don't know if he would come but I would think that TAM would be a better position then would South Carolina and the talent pool for him would be huge. He knows the SEC and he has a proven success record in the SEC. He might also be a guy you could consider.

Muschamp is another .500 year away from being unemployed, no thanks. It turns out that jumping around and screaming a lot doesnt gurantee success. Kirby Smart would be a much better hire by your criteria.

Wow. I can't honestly believe you said that. OK, well, that's fine with me. I'd rather you didn't have him anyway. Good luck in your searches TAM.
