Who should we re-sign first, Tyron Smith or Dez Bryant?

Who should we re-sign first?

This is a sort of difficult question. I'd likely opt for Tyron since his value can only get higher, even if he regressed a bit out of the gate it won't fall much. Dez is similarly at near-peak value but given the nature of the WR position if he was to struggle early next season (or injure his back again) we may be able to get a sizable discount.

What's it going to be then, eh?

I take Smith.

Franchise left tackles are harder to find in the draft and cost more to buy.

It really is not even a fair question IMO.

Doesn't Dez's (Dez' ?) rookie contract end before Tyron's? That makes it a pretty easy decision.

Smith's contract run through the 2014 season and Dez runs out at the end of the 2015 season, if I am not mistaken.

I love Dez he's my current favorite player but no question about it you have to value Smith over Bryant.

It's not even a contest. WR's help you nearly as much as protection does.

you are. Dez came aboard in 2010 on a 5 year DEAL. Tyron was drafted in 2011 and signed for 4 years. They BOTH are due

as for me I say sign Smith during the season and find out what we can get for Bryant.

Dez is my favorite player, but I sign Smith all day. I would honestly see what Dez trade value would be and try to move him for a couple picks.

If we could get 2 1st rounders from a team that is likely to pick top 12 in both years I'd pull the trigger, especially if one of those picks was this year. Maybe Oakland would do it, they've got ridiculous cap room and are projected to be drafting a WR at #5.

With the way our front office has been hitting on top picks the past few seasons I believe 4 first round picks over the next 2 years could get us back in the hunt, plus save us from giving a near-9 figure contact to Dez..

I don't think we will pick in the top 12. I think we can be a playoff team, but there is enough wrs in this Draft to groom. I think we could get a two firsts and a 3 for dez.

I meant us receiving that in return for Dez, not that our natural picks would be top 12. If we could get two firsts and a third from a team that will likely be picking quite early next season (and/or is this season), such as Oakland (who has the cap space, the desire to make big trades, and continually overspends for superstar players), I'd do it in a heartbeat. Could put us in a position to land Marcus Mariota (who'll be 21 when he comes out next year).

Yup sign smith, and be forced to throw to T-Will who can only make body catches, and maybe forced to keep Miles Austin. Who blows a tire every season, and has lost a step. Beasley who is only used for 5 yard outs.

Yup should be fun, defense's would be so scared of us, because we have T Smith

Yup sign dez, and be forced to move Free to LT since he did so great there, and maybe forced to start Parnell at RT who has started 2 NFL games in his 5 year career. Who blows a tire every season, and has lost a step. Weems who was released by 4 teams in 2012 alone.

Yup should be fun, defense's would be so scared of us, because we have Doug Free

They will resign Dez first because his contract expires first and it will be a much bigger story/distraction. Dez is the bigger name and for every day leading up to free agency every coach and executive will be asked about getting Dez a new deal and so will Dez so I think they will get it out of the way. Not saying they will sign him for that reason because they are going to sign him regardless I just think it makes life easier for everyone in the organization to get him out of the way

My guess is Dez gets extended before the start of the regular season.

My guess for Tyron Smith is that they will pick up his option for 2015 and franchise him in 2016 and probably put together a long term deal during 2016 or maybe put in place before having to franchise him.

Either way both guys will be around for the long term and people saying that Tyron Smith is the more valuable player "without a question" and "it's not even close" are flat out wrong. Both guys are among the best in the league at their positions and both positions are amongst the more important positions on a team.. If you listen to most GM's and scouts the positions other than QB of most importance are OT, DE/OLB (Pass Rusher), WR, and CB. Saying that a franchise tackle is automatically clearly more valuable than a WR is not wise in my opinion,

I think a lot of people on this forum are trying really hard to prove that they believe in building a team through the trenches which is admirable but in all honesty a good team is built through a lot of key components and trying to prove your hate for Jerry by rendering all positions aside from OL and DL useless doesn't accomplish much..

Great teams are built by having great players all around.. Tyron Smith and Dez Bryant are both great players and the Cowboys MUST and WILL find a way to sign both of them to long term deals.

The Jets and Browns both have outstanding OL/DL with poor skill position players and are terrible... The Cowboys and Bears have great skill position players and are lacking in the trenches are are average.. To build a good team you have to solidify all units.. So while it is true that the trenches are extremely important it is also true that the skill positions are as well.. Keep getting more players like Dez and Tyron and the Cowboys will be in great shape.

Lol @ the people who want to trade Dez. Lets think about the first round picks the Cowboys have drafted recently.. best the Cowboys could get for him would be a 1st and a 3rd but let's say for the sake of argument they could get 2 1st round picks for dez.

Would you trade Dez for Frederick and Claiborne?

Would you trade Dez for Jenkins and Bobby Carpenter

Would you trade Dez for Felix Jones and Anthony Spencer?

Or lets look at the 1st round receivers lately because we would now have to use the 1st we commanded for Dez to replace him.

Justin Blackmon?
Tavon Austin?
Cordarelle Patterson?
Michael Floyd?
AJ Jenkins?
Jonathan Baldwin?
Kenny Britt?
Jeremy Maclin?
Hakeem Nicks?

People get so infatuated with picks around draft time that they want to trade the few successful picks that we had for more picks lol.

Dez is a huge part of what this team does and it would be beyond foolish to try and trade him for any amount of picks.

Dez and Tyron are both players that deserve lengthy extensions that will be worth a lot of money but if you can hold off on signing the Brandon Carr's and Miles Austin's of the world to ridiculous contracts you don't have to worry about taking care of the guys who are worth the money.

Why does it have to be one or the other? How are other teams able to make it work but this damned franchise has trouble signing anyone within the cap.

If the cap is such a problem that we HAVE to choose btw Tyron Smith and Dez Bryant, then somebody in the front office HAS to be fired. They also need to stop chasing this dream of winning a title with this old core and wipe the whole slate clean. These are two young studs who you shouldn't have to get rid of.
