They will resign Dez first because his contract expires first and it will be a much bigger story/distraction. Dez is the bigger name and for every day leading up to free agency every coach and executive will be asked about getting Dez a new deal and so will Dez so I think they will get it out of the way. Not saying they will sign him for that reason because they are going to sign him regardless I just think it makes life easier for everyone in the organization to get him out of the way

My guess is Dez gets extended before the start of the regular season.

My guess for Tyron Smith is that they will pick up his option for 2015 and franchise him in 2016 and probably put together a long term deal during 2016 or maybe put in place before having to franchise him.

Either way both guys will be around for the long term and people saying that Tyron Smith is the more valuable player "without a question" and "it's not even close" are flat out wrong. Both guys are among the best in the league at their positions and both positions are amongst the more important positions on a team.. If you listen to most GM's and scouts the positions other than QB of most importance are OT, DE/OLB (Pass Rusher), WR, and CB. Saying that a franchise tackle is automatically clearly more valuable than a WR is not wise in my opinion,

I think a lot of people on this forum are trying really hard to prove that they believe in building a team through the trenches which is admirable but in all honesty a good team is built through a lot of key components and trying to prove your hate for Jerry by rendering all positions aside from OL and DL useless doesn't accomplish much..

Great teams are built by having great players all around.. Tyron Smith and Dez Bryant are both great players and the Cowboys MUST and WILL find a way to sign both of them to long term deals.

The Jets and Browns both have outstanding OL/DL with poor skill position players and are terrible... The Cowboys and Bears have great skill position players and are lacking in the trenches are are average.. To build a good team you have to solidify all units.. So while it is true that the trenches are extremely important it is also true that the skill positions are as well.. Keep getting more players like Dez and Tyron and the Cowboys will be in great shape.

Great Post

Why does it have to be one or the other? How are other teams able to make it work but this damned franchise has trouble signing anyone within the cap.

If the cap is such a problem that we HAVE to choose btw Tyron Smith and Dez Bryant, then somebody in the front office HAS to be fired. They also need to stop chasing this dream of winning a title with this old core and wipe the whole slate clean. These are two young studs who you shouldn't have to get rid of.

Agree completely. If they can damn the cap for the likes of Austin, Ratliff, Spencer, Roy W, etc. They better have a plan to manipulate the cap to keep young all pro level talents like Smith/Dez. If Ware or Witten's presence on the team effects the ability to resign these two, the decisions are even easier from my perspective; cut the old core loose.

Lol @ the people who want to trade Dez. Lets think about the first round picks the Cowboys have drafted recently.. best the Cowboys could get for him would be a 1st and a 3rd but let's say for the sake of argument they could get 2 1st round picks for dez.

Would you trade Dez for Frederick and Claiborne?

Would you trade Dez for Jenkins and Bobby Carpenter

Would you trade Dez for Felix Jones and Anthony Spencer?

Or lets look at the 1st round receivers lately because we would now have to use the 1st we commanded for Dez to replace him.

Justin Blackmon?
Tavon Austin?
Cordarelle Patterson?
Michael Floyd?
AJ Jenkins?
Jonathan Baldwin?
Kenny Britt?
Jeremy Maclin?
Hakeem Nicks?

People get so infatuated with picks around draft time that they want to trade the few successful picks that we had for more picks lol.

Dez is a huge part of what this team does and it would be beyond foolish to try and trade him for any amount of picks.

Dez and Tyron are both players that deserve lengthy extensions that will be worth a lot of money but if you can hold off on signing the Brandon Carr's and Miles Austin's of the world to ridiculous contracts you don't have to worry about taking care of the guys who are worth the money.

One caveat, Brandon Carr's contract isn't ridiculous.

you are. Dez came aboard in 2010 on a 5 year DEAL. Tyron was drafted in 2011 and signed for 4 years. They BOTH are due

as for me I say sign Smith during the season and find out what we can get for Bryant.

yep. Sign Smith and shop Dez.

It very well sounds like you are the infatuated one with Dez Bryant. You think the Cowboys fanbase doesn't understand that the team needs more than just trench players. You must consider yourself smarter than us who would like to see what we could get from a player who will try to max out our cap and has a history of me me to some degree. Why go the trouble of listing lame 1st round picks when you omit the solid WRs that have been drafted early. I will be fair and say that Bryant has done many good things. I will also be fair and note that he is a fumble machine and has cost the team critical yards because of his temper. I'm not going to talk about his mom and really never went there with hate. The Smith kid has never caused issues for the team and has played allpro football without the headache. If Dallas procures a trade the team could land a young WR talent coming in and give us cap relief that sets the franchise up for a run in the near future. If we sign him fine. But I like to stall inking an immature player as long as I can and if it is up to me I keep the deal as short as I can, even paying more to keep him on his best behavior. I'm pretty sure the most Dallas could get for Dez is one 1st round pick anyhow.

Dez is a newsmaker and that means money. Both him and Tyron will be hear for the long haul because Witten, Romo and Ware will be gone soon enough and Jerry navigates by stars to find his *********.

This is a sort of difficult question. I'd likely opt for Tyron since his value can only get higher, even if he regressed a bit out of the gate it won't fall much. Dez is similarly at near-peak value but given the nature of the WR position if he was to struggle early next season (or injure his back again) we may be able to get a sizable discount.

not difficult. I take tyron smith. on the offense it starts with QB, then LT, then the rest of the offense. if your QB is running for his life and is on his back, having calvin Johnson and fitzgerald won't help you.

Dez is my favorite player on the team, but Smith is the best player and at a more important position. No brainer really.

I'd say LT is a bigger priority. That said, there's no way Jerry lets either one walk. They'll both be resigned to long term contracts.

The NFL's most talent rich position is probably WR.

There are 17 WRs in the league that are legitimate number 1s:

{Calvin Johnson, AJ Green, Julio Jones, Dez Bryant, Josh Gordon, Andre Johnson, Larry Fitzgerald, Brandon Marshall, Demaryius Thomas, Alshon Jeffrey, Jordy Nelson, Antonio Brown, Vincent Jackson, Anquan Boldin, Hakeem Nicks (when healthy), Roddy White (when healthy-- probably on the decline), Stevie Johnson}

There are about 10 more guys that are very, very good number 2 types who just need a competent receiver to take some pressure off, or are on the verge of being legitimate number 1s.

{Wes Welker, DeSean Jackson, Victor Cruz, Percy Harvin*, Mike Wallace, Michael Floyd, Torrey Smith, T.Y. Hilton, Keenan Allen, Eric Decker (to a lesser extent, from what I've seen)}

All in all, there are enough WRs in the league to make enough of an impact if we were to lose Dez. We would likely not land another Dez for years, but he's just not as important as a cornerstone at the LT position.

If I had to choose between keeping tyron or dez, i'd pick dez.

Why? tony romo has dealt with o-line issues and has played well, he needs a playmaking WR.

If we didn't have tony romo? Give me tyron all day.

It depends how much Dez wants and especially how his back is doing. Where is the 'it depends' option?

That's a very good point. But at the same time you have to consider that Romo may not be here that much longer. Certainly not as long as Smith could be here.
