At the risk of some criticism, I don't think he'll be able to play at an elite level ever again.

Back trouble, not being able to practice and missing loads of games in a season results in a rapid decline if your Tony's age.

I think Tony, when healthy, will continue to play really well. The big problem is the back. Yeah, the collarbone got him this year. But his back could go if he turns the wrong way while brushing his teeth. You just don't know with a back condition. Plus, he's not a huge guy who nonetheless plays like he is, in an offense with a lot of long developing plays. I think with a little luck, he'll play the majority of games next year. But I would be really surprised if we get more than that out of him. We certainly should not be counting on getting more than that out of him.

Where is rationale behind this thread coming from?

In the last five years he's played 15,15,16, 16, & 4 games.

The same amount as Roethliberger by the way. Yes injury is always a concern and he's older but it's not like he's been playing half seasons. Brady has missed full seasons before and Peyton us right on the edge, it happens but I don't see this as a trend and there's nothing to suggest there is.

I agree we need to find his replacement but c'mon. He had two awkward hits on the same injury and it will be fully healed and he's another year removed from back surgery.

This is my line of thinking as well.

Yes, it's time to look to the future and plan for it but I think Romo can play another three years. It seems like to me that he has a pretty good handle on his back issues and how to prepare and work with it to get ready for games and the season. Of course, one hit could change that but that's the case for every player at every position. They are all potentially just one hit away from being out for good.

I'm not on the draft a QB in the top 5 this year train because I don't think there is a QB in this year's draft worth a top 5 pick. We definitely need to bring in a top quality backup QB this year. I think there will be better QB options in the draft in another year or two for us to have the opportunity to get.

As Don pointed out. Look at his last five years played. He has been fine with the exception of this year. Before the collarbone injury against the Eagles this year, I thought he looked great out there. The comeback to win the game against the Giants on opening night was the highlight of the year and it was vintage Tony Romo.

I don't know about the four to five year timeframe, but three years is absolutely reasonable to expect in my opinion.

I doubt it.

His backup however he's sourced will see playing time.

I think you have to be prepared for all contingencies, but yes I think it is very possible Romo makes it through a season without a serious injury. Drafting a QB in the top five won't do us any good. None of the kids coming out are plug and play starters. We still need to find an adequate back-up.

With the rookie salary cap it's possible to do both nowadays.
