I think when the Eagles took Dawkins back in the day, it was a similar reaction the fans had when they passed on R Williams and took McNabb instead... Dawkins started his career a little maligned and injury prone from what i remember... but he's matured into a force at his position...

Hey Phoenix T... I'd like to get your take on this if you read this post... what do you remember and of course what is your opinion on the two players in this thread???

We understand ..... being an Eagles fan, we dont expect you to understand football that much.

Seeing as the most famous athlete in philly is "make believe" ...... it makes sense.
yes, it's so out of this world for me to prefer Dawkins in his prime over Roy Williams. Give me a break you homer.

Statistically speaking, they are very close, and RW has not hit his full potential yet, whereas Dawkins is on the decline.

If RW keeps up his current yearly averages of tackles and INTs, he will have surpassed Dawkins current career totals in both categories nearly two full years sooner than Dawkins did. He already has more defensive TDs in his career

Since we are going up against the Eagles this week, I feel a necessary question to ask is who would you rather have on your squad.Brian Dawkins or Roy Williams? Now im pretty biased when i say Roy but Dawk dude can play. He is all over the field and plays his heart out. But.... He dont lay the wood like Roy does day in and day out. Plus, with Roys coverage getting better and him being younger, I feel its a no-brainer. How bout you guys?Whos the better player???:star:

Apparently, I would rather have who ever is NOT a Cowboy. Because the more and more I come here, there is someone clamering for the other guy. I just give up...and say...yea...that guy is better than what ever Cowboy you are comparing him too and we just screwed up yet another draft and the Cowboys should just fold as a franchise...or move to LA...which ever is worse.

I'll take Roy because he's younger, but even if you give Roy all his props, it would be foolish to try and argue that he's better than Dawkins has ever been. They've actually been pretty similar type players, but Dawkins gets to make a few more plays because Philly plays such an attacking defense.

Reed is the only Safety that I absolutely 100% would prefer.

Dawkins is nearing the end of his career so not really a fair question.

But dawkins has made so many game changing plays for the birds, and still does.

You're joking right, asking that question on this board?

Oh yeah, and Roy hands down.

I've been a Roy Williams fan since his early days at Oklahoma. I would take Roy over any other safety in the league... not so much because I think he is THE BEST of them all, but I obviously am biased in my admiration for the player and THE MAN that Roy Williams is. He is nothing but class and is one of the few people in professional sports these days that I would not mind my kids looking at him as a role model (on and especially OFF the field).

That said, I have the utmost respect for Brian Dawkins. I haven't seen a lot of him other than highlights and such, but, if you look at his stats, he's an amazingly good Safety. Some people in this thread are labelling him as past his prime and on his decline... I can't argue that, but I think some would be surprised to know that, when Philly was struggling last season offensively and defensively, Brian Dawkins had the 2nd best year of his career STATISTICALLY.

I believe Dawkins was THE BEST safety in the league last season STATISTICALLY. He was very well rounded and led the big name safeties (Roy, Sean, Troy, Ed) in most every category.. INTS, FFs, Pass Defenses, and sacks. (I'm going from memory here so don't flame me if I'm wrong on 1 of those)

Obviously that doesn't just do away with the discussion of who was THE BEST because stats don't show everything. I wish they kept stats on TD's and receptions given up.

Bottom line.. I'd choose Roy if I had to choose... but, I agree with KC Joyner, Brian Dawkins is the best FS in the league and Roy Williams is the best SS in the league.

In general i would rather have Roy Williams. I can see he's improved since last year in pass coverage. Plus he's still really good at stopping the run, and is a beast at the LOS.

I would say they're about equal over the course of their careers. Of course Dawkins has declined some and Roy is in his prime right now.

Roy was the only safety last season -- and the first in at least five years -- to have at least three interceptions, three forced fumbles for turnovers and 2.5 sacks (not to mention a fumble recovery and a touchdown). He also needs only two interceptions for the rest of this season to match or surpass Dawkins' big-play numbers in every category through the first five seasons of their careers. Roy already is tied or ahead in every other category.

Oh, and "passes defended" are a complete joke for Philly players. It's well documented that the statistician in Philadelphia awards passes defended for doing nothing, while in every other stadium, you actually have to defend the pass (break up the catch, knock down the ball, etc.) to get a PD. In Philly, guys get a PD just for being near the receiver when the ball sails over his head or bounces at his feet. Football Outsiders counts Philly PDs as one-half a PD, and that might be generous.
