Who's the Dummy that Keeps Blowing his FB Coverage Assignment?

OK - so I listened intently to Tuna's Press Conference yesterday (I love the fact that you can download it to your iPod). Anyway, he spent a lot of time toward the end of the PC talking about the blown FB coverage assignments over the past 2 games.

He said that someone on the defense was making mental errors on a really simple coverage scheme. This individual (it sounded like it was one culprit - although in previous PCs, Tuna has hinted that it might be 2 players) seems to have mixed up the coverage called, and blown the assignment.

Now, as best I could understand, Parcells stated that in a tight alignment (e.g., Goal Line), the ILB must cover the FB in the "flat first." So the defensive player will often shout out "flat first" to confirm the coverage.

For wider alignments, the OLB has responsibility for the FB in the flat.

To add further clues, Parcells stated that the culprit got beat on identical plays run by Atlanta and New Orleans on two consecutive weeks, making the same exact mistake twice.

Given all of the hints dropped, I ask the forum, who is the dummy that keeps blowing the FB coverage?

Doesn't Ayodele play on the side that the FB's broke free?

No. James is generally on Ware's side. I don;t think we switch them up, but I could be wrong. I think burm's got it, though. James and Fowler. It's only been Fowler on the goalline, since that's the only time he's in there, but I'm pretty sure they're the two.

Now you're just trying to get on my good side by calling me young. It worked. :p:

And yes I did watch Scooby Doo. I actually watch the new Scooby and Shaggy one on WB, but it's pretty stupid.

Why is Fowler in the game? Is he better around the goal line than Bradie or Akin? If he keeps screwing up the coverages, why keep insisting that he play in this situation?

Sure fowler screws up the coverage, but the coaches should have pulled him by now for not doing his job. :bang2:

Personnell changes in the goal line red zone defense.

I have to go back and look at the exact alignment but having less space requires less are to need to cover so you can bring in extra linebackers, especially if ware is on the D-line.

Mosley Report Part 2
Lots of good "A" Gap talk out here this afternoon.

And Bill gave me a very detailed account if what's been happening on the "first in the flat" defense.

Today, Bill said that two different players had combined to make at least four mental mistakes in the team's goal-line defense, thus allowing obscure fullbacks to gain notoriety.

After a long investigation, I'm able to tell you that Ryan Fowler's been the culprit on a couple of the miscues and Bradie James has also been in on one.

As the inside linebackers in what Parcells calls the "red zone defense," one of the two inside linebackers has to be responsible for taking the first guy in the flat on certain calls. Other times, one of the safeties might be responsible for picking up the first guy in the flat.

Sean Payton did a great job of having his wideouts create a traffic jam inside while Mike Karney slipped outside. Fowler and James both have to do a better job of being aware of the fullback and not get caught in what coaches call the "trash."

The team will spend a lot of time in practice tomorrow going over this, according to Bill...

Asked if qualifying for the playoffs has made all his struggles the past few years worthwhile, Parcells said, "It's always worth it. If you don't want to put yourself at risk, you should be in a different line of work. This is a highly competitive industry. You can't just pass off a bad day and hope nobody will notice."...

What does Bill worry about the most these days? "This team getting the sense of what the playoffs will be like. This is one of the hardest parts of my job."

He's worried that some of his younger players may have a "just happy to be here" approach...

One of the things that Parcells doesn't seem all that worried about it is how his defense has struggled recently. He thinks the Atlanta game would've turned out differently if Akin Ayodele hadn't fumbled.

"I know the kind of players I have," he said. "I just think we can play better that's all."
