"Controversial" is probably the wrong word for Romo. "Polarizing" is much more fitting.

If we're gonna talk "controversial", you gotta look at guys like Hollywood Henderson, Duane Thomas, Charles Haley, TO, Q-Bert Jones, etc.

For me, it's Romo. I can't think of a player who has split the fan base more than he has. I think that the problem with him is that the topic is so incredibly black and white, there's simply no gray area. Can you think of a player who has split the fan base more than Romo?

Oh yeah..but you have to have seen a lot of Cowboy football to know them.

Don Meredith was the same way..you either loved him or hated him..he also couldn't win big games..had a history of making the big int. at the wrong time.
Landry tried to replace him with both Craig Morton and Eddie LaBaron.

Morton was another one.

He got them all the way to a SB and then threw critical interceptions at the wrong time.

Then Staubach arrived and everything in Cowboy football changed.

So this team has had it's share of frustrating Qbs and fan split over who needs to play and who needs to go.

Frankly, Romo has set a new record for fan alienation.

As it was pointed out the other day..he's been in the NFL for 8 years now.

1 playoff game won in that time.

No place but in Dallas with it's arrogant owner would that happen.

Jones will surpass Al Davis as the most reviled owner.

And as fans..it's hard to watch.

Easily TO I personally loved him but oh well

I agree. When we released T.O., Austin stepped up, but this offense was never the same. And now Austin isn't even contributing.

I'm not saying it was the wrong move, because if you look at T.O. near the end, he just wasn't getting it done.

Correct in saying he is polarizing, there is nothing "Controversial" about Romo. From all accounts he is an outstanding citizen in the community and a great teammate.

Honestly - I think I am in the grey area here. I like what I see in Romo 90% of the time.........but I hate the thought of him under the pressure of a big game. I mean, I obviously WANT to see the guy win, but he has done very little to gain my confidence in his ability to win a huge game. Romo under pressure, for me anyways, leaves a lot to be desired. That can certainly change though.

Very good quality QB, but there comes a time when you need to get to that next level if you want to be considered in the top echelon. He hasn't earned that yet. He may very well get there though. He's now got some good tools to work with.

This is my feeling also Romo is 25% great, 50% solid and 10% poor and 15% choke. The difference is I don't ever see him putting 3-4 play-off games. Look at the last 2 games, he hasn't played good enough to win a play-off, he's just flat been off. So to me, the sooner we get a QB here who can handle the pressure, the better. Inconsistent like Danny White, I finally gave up on him also.

The only reason he seems so Polarizing is because of the internet and the 24 hour sports channels.. Dandy Don and Danny White went through the same thing.

Maybe not a single player but id say the topic if Carter/Hutch really upset the fan base and there were some hard lines drawn in the sand.

Owens, Henderson, and Thomas were controversial players. Romo's not even close to being the most controversial player in Dallas history. It's been said before, but Romo makes a useful standard for judging someone's football knowledge/interest/intelligence.

Agreed. Romo's "controversy" is usually some desperate media type trying to make a story out of nothing.

Can't tell you how many times an afternoon sports talk host in this town (Atlanta) comes up with a "report" that Dallas wants to get rid of Romo.

More aptly put, to a sports reporter, a Romo controversy is a convenient dodge for doing real work.

I'm something of a Doug Farrar fan (watch his tweets sometime). He can hardly be called a Dallas fan (see his tweets about our first round draft choice sometime),
but I've seen him tweet long and hard about Romo, about what he means to the team.

I'm choosing Farrar because he's statistically literate and able to use all-22 film. This SI article he penned is typical of his reviews of Romo..

Yeah, seriously, who's your pick?

Not sure if Romo makes my list of controversial players. Go back in history and you will find a lot. Even popular players like Too Tall Jones when he 'retired' to go boxing. That was controversial at the time.

As others have mentioned....Hollywood Henderson and Duane Thomas are two excellent choices. But my choice is Clint Longley. Anyone that punches Captain America gets my vote as most controversial.
