Clint Longley. There was a story about him keeping a rattlesnake at training camp one season.

The story goes that he sucker punched Staubach while Staubach was trying to take his shoulder pad and jersey off.

Clint then ran the hell out of the locker room, went to his room, got his snake and went out a window because he knew Rodger was coming after him. That was his last rodeo with the Cowboys.

Maybe someone can correct me on this story, but that is what happened.

This is my feeling also Romo is 25% great, 50% solid and 10% poor and 15% choke. The difference is I don't ever see him putting 3-4 play-off games. Look at the last 2 games, he hasn't played good enough to win a play-off, he's just flat been off. So to me, the sooner we get a QB here who can handle the pressure, the better. Inconsistent like Danny White, I finally gave up on him also.

Well then go root for some other team. We don't need your Romo bashing here.

Sure seems to be a lot of young fans here or fans that don't know Cowboy history. Romo shouldn't be listed here at all.
Hollywood Duane Thomas Peter Gent all are a good start. No modern day player comes close.

Yes! He had his moment to shine in 1974 Thanksgiving day game...when he came in after a Staubach concussion and hit Drew Pearson with a 50 yd bomb to beat Washington. That was pretty much his only moment. Later, (maybe the next year?) he slugged Staubach and he was quickly traded to San Diego.

Duane Thomas. Any player voted SB MVP that doesn't get his due because the sponsor refuses to give it to them for fear of what he'd say gets my vote. Henderson, Morton, TO get honorable mention. For those younger fans, Don Meredith gave it up because of the Dallas media (and the beatings he took). He deserves consideration esp given his proclivity for skewering remarks and nonchalance.

I dont think the OP meant anything about Romos play, as he clearly stated "a player that has split up the fan base" and in those terms i think there is only a player that has done that and thats Danny White.

Just seeing his post The typical Romolites started coming in because they read the C word proves his point. Its either that or lack of reading comprehension

Owens, Henderson, and Thomas were controversial players. Romo's not even close to being the most controversial player in Dallas history. It's been said before, but Romo makes a useful standard for judging someone's football knowledge/interest/intelligence.

Percy,

Can anyone compare to Duane Thomas in our history? Doesnt he have to be at the top of the list?

i think the correct word is polarizing.

Romo is definitely the most polarizing player ive exerienced in my admittedly young post triplet fandom.

T.O. is a very close second.

It's pretty crazy, if you just say "Romo", you get a barrage of extremist opinions. People don't even read what you're saying.

Oh yeah..but you have to have seen a lot of Cowboy football to know them.

Don Meredith was the same way..you either loved him or hated him..he also couldn't win big games..had a history of making the big int. at the wrong time.
Landry tried to replace him with both Craig Morton and Eddie LaBaron.

Morton was another one.

He got them all the way to a SB and then threw critical interceptions at the wrong time.

Then Staubach arrived and everything in Cowboy football changed.

So this team has had it's share of frustrating Qbs and fan split over who needs to play and who needs to go.

Frankly, Romo has set a new record for fan alienation.

As it was pointed out the other day..he's been in the NFL for 8 years now.

1 playoff game won in that time.

No place but in Dallas with it's arrogant owner would that happen.

Jones will surpass Al Davis as the most reviled owner.

And as fans..it's hard to watch.

We should start by setting the record right on this post...Dandy Don replaced LaBaron. The Cowboys only became controversial when Pete Gent wrote his book. Back then there was no 24-7 media coverage. The guy who gave up on Danny White, gave me the best laugh. Maybe he should have just given up on their defense and not White. Maybe you better check his history again your ignorance was really showing.

Like the real fans know, use your own mind and eyes and not the media garbage. I think what the OP was saying is Romo has split the fan base. Has nothing to do with locker room problems, or team problems. But Romo is far from being the first Cowboy , the so called realists have turned on. Now the flavor of the week is Miles Austin, next it will be Ware, then Witten. Tony is just getting a reprieve right now, because we are in first place in the East.

You know what, you're right, "polarizing" would have really been a better wording.

Can't think of any player more controversial in team history than TO. There wasn't a more controversial player in the NFL at the time he signed with the Cowboys. Signing him created even more controversy.

Romo does not make the top ten. The only controversial thing he ever did was going to Mexico before a playoff game

Of course, that won't stop most of the responses from being about controversial players in Cowboys history. There have been some real ones.

On the "polarizing" thing, I think there's something that distinguishes different parts of the fan base to begin with, and I don't think it's their opinions of Romo. Different people obviously have different ways of understanding the role of a quarterback in the overall success or failure of a team. Those who understand the same way seem to agree on Romo.

As others have mentioned....Hollywood Henderson and Duane Thomas are two excellent choices. But my choice is Clint Longley. Anyone that punches Captain America gets my vote as most controversial.

Yep. Those are my exact top 3, Hollywood Henderson, Duane Thomas and Clint Longley. Honorable(or should that be dishonorable) mention to TO.
