Why are most major decisions last minute deals?

They have decided to bring him back.
They like to drag out negotiations thinking they are really savvy even though they aren't.

It's all very simple, and Jerry's trips to meltdown city this year are indicative of him being a control freak...He needs to/craves power and you don't need to look further. As his decripid body ages, he is somehow becoming worse

I have little doubt he drags things out so the media has a reason to ask him things, but in this case I’d guess it goes a little deeper…

Gut feeling tells me it’ll come down to money…and it absolutely should not. Shouldnt the FO have a definitive plan as to who they want as a HC and why…or if they want to move on or not??

Of course they should, but very similar to when it comes to filling a gaping hole on the roster, it’ll come down to whether paying the money was deemed ‘worth it or not’ by the two kings of misevaluation.

These are the guys that would rather go without linebackers than “overpay” for a free agent….then get stomped in the playoffs because they can’t stop the run.

Point being….whether they want McCarthy back or not should NOT come down to paying him like 8m vs 10m per. It’s should be about if he is the right HC or not…..but it’ll end up being about money, and my guess is he does not return, unless he is willing to continue to work cheap.

Sure it has. Probably before the Cowboys were officially eliminated.
No I disagree man if this was the case he'd have been fired immediately or the contract is going to end up like Garrett, he's sitting around waiting to be resigned, and finally it runs out ,and he has to walk,

but in my opinion Jerry's been flip flopping for a while now, he's looking at how the teams played late in the year he's fighting that urge to do the right thing, and get rid of them but worried about who is replacement is and how the team will react, I mean I realize the support from some of our stars from both sides of the ball don't mean a lot because they were said in public but that carries some weight in Jerry S mind that these players like him I get it some like Garrett as well but who is his replacement? This is playing a what if game completely hypothetical but what if Jerry S waiting on Mike Zimmer maybe he's asking Mike Zimmer do you want to stay here as the DC what do you think about working with Mike McCarthy next year I mean these things have to be going through his mind that's why you have this little period from the last game until the 14th to make a decision...

so, I don't think his mind was made-up by any means, I think he had a good idea of what he wants to do but i don't think he's 100%....

In my opinion it'd be a monumental mistake to get rid of Mike McCarthy just to bring back somebody like him I mean who Gruden I don't know I remember when Ryan said he could get this team back on track remember the mid-season around the bye week he's saying he could fix this defense he could fix this team I mean The Jets are interviewing Ryan what was the other name being thrown around another retread?

My list is probably different than Jerry or yours, but I think Vrabel take it easy #1, Flores is interesting, but after that it's the popular options like BJ or Glenn.

I have seen the folks on ESPN finally call out Jerry for the nonsense that has left the franchise short of a championship game or SB for 3 decades. First time I recall hearing it from the media like I have this season.

Likely won't make a difference how the reality show is run in Dallas. But...

Saw today that the Jets owner didn’t care about late season wins because they didn’t matter and they are moving on. They are one of worst run teams out there but at least they got that part right…who cares after the fact, show urgency

Why does it seem this front office doesn't know if it wants to extend a big name player or head coach until free agency? How in the world do you not know if you want to bring back Mike after 5 years? I really do not understand what this front office is trying to do waiting until the last minute to extend CD, Dak, McCarthy (or announce his leaving). All they do is paint themselves into a corner and get way behind the 8ball. New England has wasted no time cutting Mayo, now they can openly begin their search for a Head coach. Maybe Jerry orchestrates this just for the little bit of drama/intrigue?
It’s just the Jones way with all decisions on everything related to the Cowboys. They like to sit back and watch and wait. Sometimes it works, but it is frustrating as heck. I think they get tunnel vision, focused on one thing, whether it’s player contracts, coaches, etc. Then they take their time and try to make that one thing get as close to their desired outcome as possible without seeing the big picture related to how that hurts another decision.

Dragging their feet on Dak hurt critical moves needed in free agency. Dragging their feet on Lamb hurt the team because after missing all of camp, the usual chemistry wasn’t there and Lamb had a slow start which hurt the team since he was the only real wideout on the team with Cooks out.

So why does that make you think they don't not know if they want to bring back Mike?

Because they have known for quite a while.
I suspect you're right and my guess is they want to bring MM back, but need to figure out the logistics of bringing him back, fan reaction, as well as agreeing on a price tag. This isnt a situation like last offseason where they had a sudden unexpected loss in the playoffs...they've had half the season to evaluate and discuss what to do with the coaching staff.

Because he doesn't care. You guys think Jerry is Dallas 24/7. He has tons of other businesses. Dallas is just one of many. He's not a fan. He could careless if we win or lose. Bottom line for him is the green as in money. So? WHY should he be in a hurry. Money still pouring in regardless. He gets in front of the camera and lie to Dallas Cowboy fans gullible enough to believe him that he cares. That's just to keep your gullible butt to continue to spend. If his action doesn't show you he doesn't give a flip. Then keep drinking the Kool aide. Lucky for you it's not poisonous this time......

Yeah it's like other's have already said. Everything always comes down to the last minute cause there isn't a plan in place for anything else.
My guess as to why they procrastinate is the following 3 reasons:

1. Arrogance. JJ thinks he is a brilliant football man, and has supreme confidence in his ability to construct a roster, so he is simply not in a rush bc his part is the most critical, and obviously, JJ believes he’s “got this.”

2. Incompetence. The FO quite simply doesn’t do their due diligence, they react rather respond to issues, and muddle their way through decisions without much of a plan.

3. Stubbornness. JJ does things his way, always has, always will. He would rather lose his way than win doing things another’s way.
This is pretty much it in a nutshell.

1. In addition, who is going to push him if he is the owner and the "GM". He's on his own time
2. Definitely more reactive vs already having a plan in place that you act on and prepare for
3. And this has always been the case even to the tune of losing millions and continuing to ignorantly reset the market at each position

You are using too much logic. This is one of our dysfunctional issues. It definitely keeps them in the headlines esp since they are out the playoffs. He is going to do whatever he can to keep Dallas in the headlines.

the drama man, the drama. the drama gets media and fan attention and attention is good for business....so drag them contracts and milk the drama as much as possible.
winning!? pfft...that's secondary...I can always spin that

Jerry wasn't going to fire McCarthy as long as they had a chance of making the playoffs. The Cowboys weren't officially eliminated until December and at that point it made no sense in firing him especially when his contract expired a few games.

McCarthy won't be sitting around waiting for his contract to expire just like Garrett didn't have to. Both their deals expires on Jan 14th which is only a week away. By then he will know if Chicago wants him.

Well I don't think MM can interview until after the 14th which could limit him some. Hopefully JJ waives the exclusive period and let's MM talk to other teams although we all know JJ wants MM as a fall back plan.
