Why are the Cowboys being so conservative with the Cap?

Jerry believes in Garrett's System/Scheme. It is not about the players so there is no need to spend money. Garrett just got a big extension for 1 good year. Jerry is going to make Garrett earn his money this time around. No more free rides. Please remember that Garrett is the next Laundry per this message board. Laundry believed it was all about the System not the players. Furthermore, Jerry made the playoffs last year with no major free agents signings so "if it is not broke do not fix it". Plus, the Skins, Jints, and Feagles movements these past few weeks are making it easier for Jerry to sit back and drink his Scotch with a smile on his face.

JJones has this reputation of buying all the new toys but it really isn't true. It's like the Arkansas players that he is obsessed with but never signs.

There was Deion of course and Leonard Davis, TO, RWilliamsWR and Carr but not that many others. His bigger deals have usually been our own guys. Flozell, Gurode, Witten, Austin, Romo, Ware, Ratliff, TNew, Hamlin, RW31, Lee and others.

So what is he really changing to if he won't sign Dez or Murray to long term deals and won't spend big in FA?

The Patriots did this? Really? I recall them adding Corey Dillion. I recall them adding Randy Moss. I recall them adding Chad Johnson. I recall them adding Danny Amendola. I recall them adding Darell Revis. I recall them adding Browner. I recall them adding LeGarett Blount. I recall them adding Adalius Thomas. I recall them adding Junior Seau. I recall them adding Kellen Winslow. I recall them adding Aqib Talib. I could go on and on...but the Pats have always brought in players...often guys that the media would crush other organizations for bringing in.

All these guys were brought in at bargain prices. As soon as they asked for big money, they were gone.

Also guys like Branch, Vrabel, Welker and Seymour were shown the door when when it was going to cost them big dollars. Thier guard last year whose name escapes me. They bring in guys cheap and when they ask for the moon, they are sent packing.

The only exception is Brady who is the face of the franchise.

They have brought in many guys, but never at top dollar.

Because we have a good defensive coach and they think we can continue to work miracles doing it that way. One good season and all of a sudden everyone is content.

I don't think anyone is content on the other hand it is more important to put an entire Defensive unit than to get 1 guy. 1 guy never helped this team when Ware was here how many SB did we go to? Now all of a sudden 1 guy fixes the whole thing. Dallas can get some good players still in FA guys who can come in and contribute. We are in day 2 of FA and people are freaking out? lol

This is not a matter of being content Cowboys will put together some good players and how they mesh as a unit will go a lot more than 1 guy coming in.

So everyone should just copy NE and get a Belichick and Brady. Win a bunch of Super Bowls so vets will come on cheap deals to try and win a ring.

Dallas should do what they are doing it is working. The critics as always will claim to know better yet the same critics gave Dallas no chance in hell to win last season. They do know what they are doing and we are in day 2 of FA with a lot of time before the end of FA.

Apparently the Cowboys have learned after being burned on over spending on free agents, mostly by poor evaluation of their own or outside free agent talent.

Further, they have cut said players early and have suffered with dead money (Miles 5m) on the cap which strangles you as you go forward.

In addition, restructuring pushes cap charges further down the road that will become eventual dead money if you have to cut the player early.

This is why they ideally would like to eat Romo's 27m cap hit this year instead of pushing it back to avoid a large amount of dead money hit especially considering he will probably not be playing in 5 years.

Same thing with Lee, Witten and others, Carr they are using leverage to force a pay cut to get some space back after the market is saturated in free agency and the draft.

They are trying to correct their own previous poor evaluation and choices by better cap responsibility.

They can reduce Romo down from 27m to 1m if they needed or wanted to sign anyone but the cost down the line is the issue.

We are actually into Day 5 or 6. Over 100 players have been signed.

Officially we are in Day 2, no one was being signed until yesterday. There is still a lot of time left in FA. Then again I knew going into FA Dallas was not going to come out throwing money around. Said it here many times leading up to FA. I have no doubts the Cowboys will pick up some good player in FA to boost the defense. I don't expect them to be some top 5 pass rushing team I do expect this until will continue to get better. We have some good players on this team now and a quality defensive staff to help put it together. Those who want to run around like the sky is falling be my guest, one thing I know as a fact is this place always has people going into panic mode and giving up.

And the sad thing is those folks that are running around butt-hurt were told exactly what to expect.

And instead of the Cowboys out there blowing stoopid amounts of money on contracts that are sure to get smelly quickly, they're doing exactly what they have the last couple of years.

You got it. There is a lot of time in FA there will be others hitting the market later in the season as teams make their June cuts and hopefully Dallas will be sitting pretty with money to spend. FA is not about what you can get in day 1 or day 2, if anything day 1 is when teams tend to overpay quite a bit. As good as Suh is his 19 mill avg a year is a joke. Hell Houston deal with JJ Watts last year is looking like a steal and fact is Suh is not half the disruptive force as Watt.

I am not looking for much. I want a star DE(Hardy still fits the bill), a DT, a WR5/KR, possibly a CB and a swing OT. We can get most of that later in the week and in the draft. It just gets frustrating when we can't even get our own guys signed.

Myself I don't feel that way, I think it sucks we lost Durant, I'm hoping we do not lose Murray. As for JJ doing no wrong few here will say he has done anything right. Dallas has a plan they have been sticking to and they feel it is working and they will continue to do that. If that upsets some well as we all know you can't please everyone all the time.

So who will be on the market June 1st? There is a long way to go, Hardy is so good Carolina is letting him leave and right now no other teams seem to be jumping on him. That should tell you there is something wrong. look at his numbers all you want but if he is unable to get on the field then all you have done is waste money and time on an idiot. Hell Teams will throw big money at pass rusher so yet no one is running after Hardy. It just becomes a joke around here people will complain Jerry over spends on our players or gives up picks and pays big money to outside players he is an idiot. Well how Dallas does business has changed and it is showing positive results and they are not going back to how they did business in the past.

And who in their right mind would want Dallas to pay $3.5 mil per season to Harris or $3 mil per season to Durant?

If the Cowboys handed out those ridiculous contracts most in here would be screaming for Jerry's head.

FWIW, bk, I think we WILL get our own guys signed and we'll still bolster our defense. No one knows exactly how this is all going to flesh itself out but I don't think the sky is falling by any stretch of the imagination just yet. We're all anxious for some news but no news isn't necessarily bad news right now, IMO.

I think some like screaming at Jerry regardless. If we sign them as you said he is an idiot, if he does not sign them he is an idiot. I think Dallas has a good idea of what they need and what they plan on doing.

I was really talking about Dez and Murray. If we are going to forgo FA for the most part then we should have the money to keep our core guys.
