Why are they not opening more cap space?

The Cowboys didn't know what they had in Ferguson yet. He only caught what, 17 passes as a rookie? Yes he turned into a star in the making but nobody knew this a year ago at this time.
If they truly had no idea, then they are even worse at evaluating players than I thought. TE was absolutely positively not a need. And not only that, we ignored huge needs on the OL, DL, and at LB to reach for a 4th round graded player.

It was already blatantly obvious that Fergie was going to be, at bare minimum, a solid TE. We did know. And we argued it vehemently before that draft.

Why would they need to? They have enough to cover the draft class

They simply do not want to free up money. Even with the cooks, Gilmore, hankins additions they gave up very little. They just missed out on moss who only got 4 million a year because he was too expensive. Think about that. 2 years and 8 million total was too much for a guy they liked. They clearly needed a DT and didn't even bother trying to get one of the better ones, they settled for the cheapest vet they could find. Those are some good deals but you can't always be that cheap and win.
To add, they are being cheap at the wrong positions. KC just showed how it's done, let the high priced WR's walk or trade them and draft/sign big boys for the DLine and OLine. KC just won a super bowl w/ the best QB in the game relying on GET THIS: DEFENSE. They didn't allow a single team to roll up 30 points on them. Dumped both their top WRs so they could pay the true catalyst of that team, Chris Jones. Well, the 2nd best catalyst behind Mahomes, of course.

Yes, we have done well for 3 years but let’s face the facts, most of those wins were against 500 or worse teams and when it was time for the rubber to meet the road, we folded like a cheap suit against the better teams and when it was PO time.
