Why Brad Johnson Was the Right Choice

See, I wasn't even focused on a Draft pick actually playing well enough to move forward, but that truly is a dream scenario. I would then like to groom a guy at 3rd string again.

My hope is that a legitimate thread on our backup QB will generate real football discussions and not mud slinging and be the better thread than the daily downer.

I doubt that it would arouse the same passions as Jerry, TO, Dale, Jen, etc.

Why would we have to replace him next year? The wear and tear of being a back up will tire him down?

I'm sure he can play well into his 50's. LOL

No arguement - I pretty much been thinking along the same lines.

Thinking its akin to Steve Beurline back in his day. A great back up that came in an won when he was called upon.

Buerlein was a YOUNG GUY !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Just look down on the sidelines at our OC this upcoming season for another example.

He is my all time favorite backup QB here. The reason for that is because I saw him as a potential future coach here.

Actually, Brad Johnson was my first choice as Romo's back-up. However, my caveat was always that we draft another QB (probably Day 2) to provide competition for Baker at the number 3 spot. And in 2 years this QB could replace B. Johnson.

If things go well, we could be set at the QB position for some time.

Exactly. No way I'd entrust Beck or any other rookie with the backup role this year. That's why Johnson makes sense as a "placeholder."

I'd love to have someone more exciting. Everyone knows I love Favre. Stealing a line from Mickey, you can't have a steak on every plate.

Another thing to consider is the QB controversy angle. If we had a young QB here and Romo were struggling a bit, the media would be all over it.

I seriously doubt the DFW media or the fans are going to clamor for us to insert Brad Johnson.

There are chemistry reasons behind this too.

He could opt to retire. There are situations where this is feasible.

Not sure why you would retire when you are taking in 2.5 mil a year for holding a clipboard.

Yes, even when he was 3rd string. It actually dates back to some comments by Troy Aikman about how helpful Garrett was to him personally. I just did some simple math and started thinking potential coach. I'm not surprised to see him where he is at all. His dad was a really good football mind, and Garrett is smart. Pedigree. (I know that might upset a few folks.)

Imagine if they had brought in Harrington, Ramsey, or even Plummer. The backup is always the fan favorite when the starter is going thru a bad stretch.
