What made him worth a 1st round draft pick.

Don't watch much college football, some I'm just wondering.

He has always been a player that didn't impress me, so I'm thinking what made him a 1st round caliber draft pick.

Because we knew that one day he'd get 2.5 sacks per year.

I believe 3-4 DE can be a playmaker position to an extent, that said if you don't expect the position to make a huge impact, I don't see why you would draft a player in the 1st round.

Tying up offensive linemen so your linebackers are free to run around and make plays is making an impact. If Spears isn't doing his job, Anthony Spencer and Keith Brooking aren't getting their name called. There's a reason why Scott Pioli and Bill Belichick are drafting Tyson Jackson, Richard Seymour and Ty Warren with Top 15 picks. They're not easy to find.

Again Hindsight is 20/20. At the time, it certainly seemed like he was a similar college prospect to both players, however it didn't happen in the league

Not that I endorse the move, but Tyson Jackson is very comparable to Spears, only less production in college and he was taken 5th I believe. And it's not that Scott Piolli believes he's Seymour, but 3-4 ends that can start from day 1 are rare.

Do you even watch people play before making lame comments?

Ty Warren is not any better than Marcus Spears. He has a few more sacks (mostly because of one fluke season where he had 7.5) but is so-so vs the run. In fact he's only had that 1 season with more than 4.0 sacks. He's also been in the league a couple yrs longer than Spears, was chosen higher in the draft and played for a much better defensive coordinator than what Spears did when he entered the league.
