Why doesn't Marion Barber beat out Julius Jones

No doubt Jones is the starting RB he is very explosive and capable of taking it to the house at anytime. As for Barber I think he serves a very important role on this team as well and I'm very glad he is part of this team. His work in the redzone last season was impressive and his ability to come in and take over when Jones went down makes him a very valuable member of this team

I was really impressed with Barber last year, i like the player and think he is a good fit for this offense.

Jones hasnt won me over yet to the point where i am going to defend his football ability, but last year the run blocking was awful so im going to wait to pass judgement.

Still, if it comes down to the wire and the game is on the line and its 4th down, i want TO's number called over either one of the young backs.

I might as well add my 2 cents worth for this idiotic thread...........I am a big fan of Julius Jones and if can stay healthy he will be another great back in the mold of great Cowboy running backs. But living in Minnesota for 27 years I have seen what MBIII accomplished at the U of M. Granted he split time with Maroney but you must remember they were both 1000+ rushers at the same time! Maroney was faster and a little more slippery but Barber can do it all........run, block and catch passes out of the backfield. He was very much superior to Maroney regarding his blocking and pass receiving skills and when they needed short yardage in critical situations it was Barber who got the call! Will he be a great back in the NFL only time will tell but I have seen enough of him from last year to decide that he will be better than a "lifetime backup" for the rest of his career as some of you ascertained. I am grateful that we have both of them on our team. It pays big dividends in today's NFL to have a pair of good running backs!!!:)

who cares who blocks better if both backs can block?

Well, that's pretty silly. Why wouldn't you want the better blocker in the backfield to pass protect?

Barber is much like what Parcells had with Lewis Tillman. A grinder.

No doubt but I also feel comfortable that Barber can come in for extended playing time and do a good job for the team.

Tillman could do that as well. But there is a "special" quality (or "juice" is the buzzword now) that he lacks, but he does nearly everything well. Barber is the type of back that if you have him, you are fortunate.

Why do you think Coach Parcells was so down on Jones' blocking when he was a rookie and continually said until he gets better at pass blocking, he isn't going to play much? The same rap he gave to Reshard Lee?

Your every down back has to be able to pass protect well enough so you don't have to shuttle players in and out and give cues to the defense what you intend to do.

Barber is a nice piece to have on a NFL team. I don't think you want to consistently give him 20+ carries, he just doesn't have that kind of ability on the NFL level.

Jones has that ability but has to show he can stay healthy.

Right now we have two decent RB's. There are worse positions to be in. If the line play is better this year, which I hope it is, then Jones will be a much better choice for 20+ snaps a game than Barber.

sure Julius needs to improve on his blocking, but I'd rather have the better runner, than the better blocker as my starter, and Parcells agrees with me as we've seen Julius start when healthy

btw Alex, you asked if I would prefer the better blocker in pass-protection, and passing situations are usually 3rd downs, so yes, I would want Barber in on 3rd downs, which is his role

Exactly, he has no speed, no moves, there's no comparison between him and Julius.

Listen, if JJ turns out to be the better long term back then Barber does than thats GREAT. Its just that IMO I still think Barber wins out. JJ has injury issues, he can have eyepopping talent but if he's always in the training room he doesnt help us at all. Barber had every bit, in fact probably a better college career than JJ, he's more than capable. Mark it down, If JJ goes down for an extended period than its Barbers job...PERIOD. Plus, like I said, he's the better blocking back, something hugely important in a twin t.e offense.

What's the matter with you, NFL defense don't fear guys like Barber, he's just a guy.
