Why haven't we signed our own already?

In all seriousness, none of the guys we have as free agents should really be candidates for resigning before testing the market. In essence, you are typically over paying, giving them what they think is their market value, when a lot of times, it's less than what the player thinks.
From Jones comments, they are going to let these guys loose into free agency with the idea of them coming back with their value.

I don't like that approach because you are then into the game where say an average talent like Terrell McClain goes out there and comes back with an offer that is well above what he is worth from some cap comfortable club.

It is just the same as playing the regular FA game except you are allowing an inflated market to push your own decisions. They should have already made up their minds about some of these players. Hopefully they have thresholds and stick to them instead of panicking when someone's market is bigger than expected.

The problem is, the players and agents know the amount of cap space out there, so even if they made up their mind on a Terrell McClain and know what they will pay him, I can guarantee that his number is significantly higher.

Logic may dictate that you take a fair and reasonable offer as opposed to testing free agency, but unless you are a top player about to receive a long term extension, like Tyron Smith or Travis Frederick, the sound decision is usually to hit the market, you'll make more.

There is probably going to be a player or two that we feel we have to sign, regardless and end up having to pay inflated market value. That is another drawback to not having a large amount of cushion. It is a vicious cycle if you think you are on the cusp.

That is just simple math when you have three premium choices in the draft and can't field a team full of rookies.

I agree with everything you are saying, but to sign them before they hit the market costs a premium as well. Sometimes more just because all players and agents are convinced that they will get a huge long term contract

if Carolina can sign Mario Addison before free agency starts, why haven't we done that already with at least a couple of our free agents? I realize that most will balk and want to "test the market," but you'd think we'd be able to get something done with a guy like Carr or Butler.

some FA Dallas have will be able to test FA market and Cowboys can always counter but they are not going to over pay on some of these guys, really no need to.
I think it is likely Cowboys are in contact with some of our own FA and things will heat up even more as March 9th approaches. People hollering it has been a bad off season is laughable FA has not even begun and will not begin until March 9th.

But there is a set up time for it and this is it. If they are not arranging things to be prepared, they are going to enter this reactively versus proactively.

Yes there is a set time and I think Cowboys know who they will let hit the FA market and whom they intend to get signed.

keep knocking down those windmills

you know that they will make the space ....which is 35m without Romo or Free moves

stop acting so supercilious............ the space is there whether they activate it or not..... it is real
It's like believing in only kinetic and not potential energy. Or the vice versa.

Edit: I'm going to assume everyone is joking in here.

We haven't signed anyone yet because we don't have anyone who is going to set the market for their position in anyway. Those deals happen first when free agency begins. And then we'll let the market come to us.

We're focused on the combine.
Hey common sense, long time no see on this board how ya been?
