What in the hell does not retaining Murray(who was approaching age 30!) have to do with whether they will draft a 20 year old?A 20 year old that some actual NFL personnel feel could be the best player in the entire draft(Bill Polian if you need an example).
I have no idea what the pick will be Thursday, but if you think it is or has been a foregone conclusion that the Cowboys have not at least considered taking Elliott with that 4th pick, then you don't have as firm a grip on this whole talent acquisition business as you think you do.
Courtesy of Stasheroo:
Go to spotrac and take a look at salaries for position. If you draft a running back at #4, he's making too 10 money for the position (guaranteed!) before he ever takes a snap.
Conversely? If you drafted Tunsil, he would be making the 32nd salary for a tackle, right in the middle of the league at the position. A spot current occupied by Doug Free (set to make $6.5 million in 2017)
To say nothing of the league wide value of the two based on position. Running backs are had in free agency and throughout the draft each and every year.
And next season is set up to be much more loaded in terms of prospects. You draft Elliott, not only are you overpaying based on what you could have had in free agency this year, you're using the #4 overall pick to do it, and you're taking yourself out of a better draft market at the position in 2017.
Lose, lose, and lose.
