you say that like they were talked about one of the greatest defenses ever assembled. Only TWO teams have i ever heard talked about as the greatest defense ever the 85 bears and 00 ravens

The '99 group is considered one of the top 10 defenses of all time.

The '02 group wasn't as good, but productive nonetheless.

And those defenses have the ultimate compliment. Being copycatted.

I'd put the 70's steel curtain in there. Along with the 86's Giants D.

In one of those seasons the steel curtain pitched like 6 shutouts. That's impressive.

The worst part about the current funk the Cowboys are in is dealing with momos like this all week. You can bet if we hadn't gotten sloppy and dropped a few games already this crotch pirate wouldn't even show his face around here, much less try to convince anyone but himself that Tampon Bay is the better team.

Come on Sunday.

I beg to differ.

We've never gotten respect, but not many teams have had the success we have.

Eleven of the last 12 years, we've had a top 10 defense. Going on 12 of 13. The Steel Curtain can't claim that, the Giants, 49ers and Bears of the '80's can't claim that, the Purple People Eaters can't.... even the Ray-Ray Ravens can't.

Those teams excelled on defense for shorter periods. The 1999 defense stacks up. Their work stands for itself, and history will be the judge.

Wiki explained to me the problem with Brad Johnson ...

Good in 2005, so he was named starter for the Vikes in 2006 ... but he hit the wall bigtime early that season, at age 38. Wiki says:

"He ...threw 8 touchdowns to 14 interceptions. Midway through the season, he had already set an NFL record for "passes completed short of a first down on third down" in a season. Many fans grew restless for the benching of Johnson because of his conservative checkdowns, immobility, and at the same time reckless decisions which plagued the Vikings offense. His quarterback-rating on "3rd downs", "with a lead', "from behind", and 'in the redzone" were the worst in the league. 31 QBs threw more touchdown passes while only 10 threw more interceptions than Johnson in the 2006 NFL season."

Jerry's signing was pretty foolish based on the above. Jerry's logic maybe was that Brad had once won a Super Bowl. I wonder if Jerry overrode the advice of scouts to sign him ...

Wade said on the Musers that there were going to be some "big changes" this week ... maybe Bollinger can do it, yeah baby ..

top ten means u could have been 8, 9 or 10. You can't top the curtains 6 shut outs (or which ever it was) or the ravens 165 points given up for the season or 970 yards allowed rushing all season. the Bears defense makes your look like crap (which it is).

the steel curtain defense helped bring in 4 super bowl wins...your defense brought in 1

History has had its time to judge and your not in the top 10

So if I post a blog with them in it, does it count?

The body of work has been there. Several years (6 of the 11) we've been top 5.

As far as the single season thing goes, the '02 team is almost statistically identical to the '85 Bears, '00 Ravens and '76 Steelers in some respects.

196 points given up. - 2 less than the '85 Bears
4.5 yards/pass attempt - equal to the '76 Steelers
2490 pass yards - Nearly equal to those '76 Steelers (14 games)
1554 rush yards - '76 Steelers had 100 less yards against in two fewer games
18 total TD's - '85 Bears had 22 TD's against
43 sacks - '00 Ravens had 35 sacks
31 INT's - '00 Ravens had 23 INT's
9 defensive TD's - '00 Ravens had 2, '85 Bears had 7, '76 Steelers had 5.

The numbers do the talking. And unlike every other "great defense", except the '00 Ravens whom we scored the same number of TD's as all year, all had good, sometimes great offenses to help those defenses.

Do I think that holds up? Yeah, I do.

congrats you had sacks and ints. Your defense still ISN"T great nor was it then point blank. I can make a blog stating the 2003 cowboys was the greatest defense ever just because it was number 1 that year...doesn't mean its true

I haven't liked the Bollinger signing from day one, nor did I the Johnson signing. Can't say I'm high on either.

But you're absolutely right on the Johnson signing proving foolish. He sounded good in theory -- an older guy with a Super Bowl to back up Romo, who hopefully would act like a sponge and soak up all his wisdom. So long as he never had to play a down, it sounded good, at least.

A good backup takes this team to a 1-2 mark at worst in three starts (with a victory over St. Louis), and a 2-1 mark at best (with a squeaker past a good Tampa team or a shocker over New York).

That's what earned Garrett legendary status here. You could put him in and expect the whole thing not to fall apart.

But with Brad, it seems like we're all bracing for the worst. Hopefully he can come through with a shocker on Sunday and make us rethink how a bad a signing he was.

I'm too lazy to look it up -- how far did that Tampa Bay team advance in the playoffs?

You won't admit it, but the numbers are there. The defensive scores are what made them special.

And I never stated they were the best ever. Top 10.

'03 Cowboys don't have the numbers, or the success.

Bollinger has never played for Baltimore. He was with the Jets for two yrs and the Vikes for two yrs, now here.

The one yr he actually played some he completed 150/266 (56.4%) for 1558 yds, 7 tds and 6 ints. His QB rating was 72.9. That was his 2nd yr in the league.
