If you are trying to prove a point, it helps if you get the player name right.

Dallas needs more than a backup. They need a dominating NT kind of like Jamal Lewis.

it's Jamal Williams, and he isn't in this draft

Sadly, there isn't your prototypical 3-4 NT in this draft.

This may lead to a bit of a stretch where Phillips may use a smaller, less conventional tackle to assume the NT spot.

He didn't do very well with this approach in Atlanta (Ed Jasper), but is not afraid.

No but Alan Branch is. If by some minor miracle he slips to 22 than Dallas should pounce on him.

Don't worry about it....if there is anyone on this board that says he hasn't had one of those ... he's a big fibber. :)

And?

Just because someone hovers around the 300 pound range, doesn't mean that they are a nose tackle.

Body build and leverage are important as well.

I know, but there's a reason teams look for NTs who are at least 310-315, and you you just said it, body build and leverage are important, so 295 would look great for a NT if you were like 5'10"

310-315 is not huge.

Jamal Williams might be listed at 348, but he might even be 370.

Fresno State has a large young player I wouldn't mind looking at in Louis Leonard.

I know 310-315 isn't huge, but that's the least you should weigh if teams are looking at you as a NT, and even then you would have to be pretty short to possess the body width to be effective there, since the NT's job is pretty much taking up space in the middle to occupy the C and OG

I'll have to look Louis Leonard up

Depth at NT is certainly a concern, but I would not call it a "glaring need". Glaring need is when you have Pete Hunter as your starting CB, or Rob Petetti as your starting tackle.

I personally thought Furgeson played fantastic for the most part, he still needs to watch his conditioning, and would benefit from having a guy to rotate in a little.

Overall I thought he improved greatly last season and there were quite a few plays where he gave tremendous effort. He is a very under rated player IMO, when healthy he is a heck of a player. Is he all pro? not quite, he is about as solid a DT as Henry is a corner IMO.

That being said, I would love for us to add another DT to the mix, but at least we have a solid player at this position. Who knows, he might also benefit greatly from our new defense, if our Ends start kicking but it should help him as well.

Another thought, If Spears doesn't really blossom at DE, or if Hatcher/Canty out play him, then he could be a guy that could add a few pounds and possibly make a successful transition to DT, He sure wouldn't have any problems adding a few lb's, and he has a nice thick/wide base, i'll bet he could fill in now in a pinch if need be.

IMO, our biggest glaring need is a NT.
The NT is the anchor of any 3-4 defense. It is a vital position for success in stopping the run and getting to the passer.

As of now we have an aging Ferguson and...
????

Ferguson needs some relief in rotation and what happens if he gets injured?

And please don't give me M. Stanley as the solution. He was cut from camp and then cut again from JAX before returning to Dallas as Practice Squader.

I'm with ya, here's mine:

Leonard Louis: 6-4, 325. He had 26 tackles in 12 games, 6 TFL and 3 sacks.

Doesn't Fresno play a 3-4?

Did anyone read or hear anything about Marcus Spears getting a chance at the nose? I thought I saw that somewhere. I can't hardly believe it, and it doesn't make sense to me...

BP has been the coach for waaay too long... when fans care about drafting NTs its just sad!

...shades of last year when BP fans defended drafting a slow PR with a 4th rounds pick!

Im pretty sure Coach Phillips will be looking at what we have behind Ferguson at NT. I don't want to hate on our beloved board here, but I highly doubt how many threads we start about NT have any impact on what our staff thinks of and about the position.

Would love to get a young guy around 6'3ish 230is to back up Ferguson. More than anything, if that guy can be as strong as an ox, that would help too, but I am one of the ones who think that we need help behind Ferguson.
