Why people continue to talk about trading Ellis

First let me say I am one of the biggest Ellis fans out there. But I am a bigger Dallas Cowboys fan. So I care more about what is in the clubs best interest. I also think he could be primier player in a 4-3 club that simply lets him rush the passer.

#1 This is Greg Ellis' final year under contract
#2 Greg Ellis is making a lot of money (For a backup anyways)
#3 We have become stocked at defensive end with the drafting of Hatcher
#4 Greg Ellis has trade value
#5 We probably won't be able to resign Ellis after this year.
#6 I'd rather see Hatcher get playing time than Ellis (for the futures sake (sack)).


That said I think I'd like to see us trade Ellis for a veteran guard. That would tighten up our offense, and give us a more realistic opportunity to win a super bowl this year. We should have traded him before the draft, and signed Bentley.

The Rams love Dallas defensive players... There are a few teams around the league who basically stockpiled on our leftovers. Cleveland (and thus Denver), Arizona, and St. Louis.

Yeah, sorry I mistook Glovers' contract with Ellis'. Still not cheap for a backup, but certainly something that would even pique more interest for a trade.

Fabini is a much safer pick at tackle than Kosier is at guard..

Shaun, even without Ellis we still have Ratliff, and we still have Coleman, not to mention Hatcher. What is more important is that apparently even Ellis feels unwelcome and crowded. We certainly have more than 4 defensive ends.

Flzoell Adams was the anchor of our oline, Ellis has been regulated to being a backup, used more in 3rd down situations.

Both Spears and Canty have a year more under their belts. And in addition we have a MUCH stronger linebacker corps this year.

I think that its merited to point out that this rumor is coming from theranchreport which has about as much credibility as the world weekly news.

It doesnt have any direct quotees or evidence but rahter that Ellis has missed some offseason workouts and infers that he must be unhappy. Nonsequitor if you ask me.

Ellis runs to JJT when he has a problem just as he has for the past several years. He hasnt done it this year so i take take this 'article' with the whole salt shaker.

Keep in mind that Ellis also did much better in this defensive scheme than even he imagined and came one sack shy of his career high (in a limited role mind you).

As another poster alluded to, I'm not in favor of creating one hole to fill a percieved other. Ellis for a guard? Come on. What guard out there is a team willing to give up for Ellis that is going to equal what Ellis brings to our own team (especially at those cap numbers)? Looking at the cap numbers, it wouldn't surprise me to see Ellis in a Cowboys uniform next year also (which would be just fine with me). Ellis has never been a game changer, but he's been solid and hasn't been a liabilityin any phase of the game. Not spectacular, but pretty damn solid, and EVERY defense needs a couple of those guys (Yes, even ours).
