Why Smith over Jack

Smith is a elite athlete with a Luke Keachly head on his shoulders..............Jack is a elite athlete

if our scouts thought he was better and our doc did the surgery...he may take longer to heal...but if we think he's that much better why pass on an elite talent, just because we have to redshirt him if he's better than Jack?

This is how you end up with special players without paying the premium.

Hedging their bets. Safe in the first. Riskiest high reward move in the second. They were reportedly out on Jack's knee before anyone else. Their own guys did Smith's surgery.

The team doctor who performed the surgery knows it will.
What more do you need?

I don't think you understand that nerve regeneration is not predictable. Even his surgeon can't predict that. Right now you see him moving because his ligaments are healing nicely but that nerve is going to be the big IF.

It's a huge risk. But if you are going to take one, take it on the kid that a lot of scouts said was arguably the best player in the whole draft.

I understand...I also understand that we are getting our information from the actual Doctor that opened him up and was inside of his leg...the same doctor that has been following up on recovery ect...
I trust Jerry wouldn't just throw away an early second round pick on a hope.

Word is Smith's knee will get better while Jack's might get worse

That's the problem I don't trust Jerry. He's a gambler.

Listening to Smith's interviews he was pretty shocked to be taken this early. It didn't appears that any teams have given indication that they will pick him this early.

Is Jacks knee worse then Smiths?

I think Dallas sees Smith coming back for a long career and Jack just lasting a few seasons before his knee is gone.

According to Smith the nerve is improving every day and the doctor said that the nerve was stretched to a point it went off but had minimal damage. So they all seem to be optomistic that he will be fine eventually.

Smith is easily the best player in the draft if he had 2 knees.

Actually the nerve was not damaged at all. It just went to sleep and it is a matter of time before it wakes up.

Normal nerve doesn't go to "sleep" nor does it "wake up" on demand. I wish I have the optimism of this board. Even Smith was shocked he was picked so early.

I love the kids and his pre injury talent but can't this team exercise some restraint and take risks at appropriate times? Bill Parcell and Jimmy Johnson are probably having a good laugh at Jerry right now.

Who said anything about on demand? The nerve was stretched until it shut off with no damage, it is just a waiting game until it goes back to normal.

I had no idea how many doctors we have on this board. I know dr cooper because he is my knee dr. He wont talk to anyone about anything. All these "reports" are just speculative at this point. It's nerve damage. Even the doctors don't know what or when anything will happen.

...A checkup by NFL teams last weekend in Indianapolis showed Smith remains unable to raise his left foot or swing it out to the side because of an issue with his peroneal nerve. But the "foot-drop" isn't a surprise at this stage, said his surgeon, Dr. Dan Cooper, who is “optimistic that his knee itself will be stable and a good knee and he’ll get all his strength back. And I also think he has a very good chance of getting his nerve recovery back.”

That’s because the lateral damage stretched Smith’s nerve “enough to make it go to sleep, but it wasn’t stretched enough to be structurally elongated or visually very damaged” like more severe injuries, Cooper told USA TODAY Sports. There’s normally a one-month lag time before the nerve regrows at all, and once it begins, the rate is only about 1 inch per month...

Maybe he wont talk to you but apparently he will talk to reporters. Not saying he will recover or you are wrong, but this is the report, right from Dr. Cooper, that is what everyone is discussing.

(and yes I do realize it says there is no guarantee - just pointing out that the information is coming from a quote directly from Dr. Cooper and not just pure speculation).

The rumors are that they think Smith's knee can get better while Jack's could be a degenerative thing over time. So if they are thinking long term, Smith might actually be the better long term investment.

I've been going at this with RS12. It is exactly that. The prospect of his ACL and MCL recovery are much better than what Jack has which will shorten his career and can be an issue at any given time.
