Why the Jonathan Mingo trade could haunt Dallas in 2025

The trade was made for one reason. Jerry was in the middle of being told by everyone how he completely screwed up the offseason and how the Cowboys were out of it and should be sellers at the deadline and Jerry kept telling everyone we were still in it in a desperate attempt to remain relevant and reverse the narrative that his incompetence as a GM was the main story of the 2025 season and the reason we stunk. So Jerry makes a trade thinking it convinced anyone other than his equally dopey son that we were actually still in it. Add to that the inability that this team has to understand that college scouting reports have little (not none, but little) value once a player has been in the NFL for a couple of years and there you go, we trade a valuable pick for a guy who probably shouldn't be dressing on game day on a decent team.
Nope

Yeah it was a bad deal.
It just speaks to the disfunction of the organization. It was clear that the coaching staff had no use for him, but Jerry the bargain hunter pulled the trigger anyways. This has been happening for the last decade. It's been a long time since we hit on a project player. Maybe the last one was Rolondo McClain. Trading and drafting guys with obvious mental (Gregory, Joseph) and physical (Carter, Smith) ailments keeps setting us back. It's time for the FO stop getting cute and go chalk.

IMO they just jumped on something they perceived as value. They had a very high grade on him. Me and alot of others here liked him alot coming out too. They didnt put enough into scouting him as a pro player. Under 50% catch percentage, amd didn't improve year 2. I actually think it got worse here.

He is basically their 4th rounder, but they lose two years of control. That and his upside now appeara to be below average #3
Very smart take. I didn’t see it that way but with a offseason who knows.

What troubles me is does he mean they pas up a receiver early?

Brainless trade. Even it they had a 2nd grade on him. They had a year and a half of watching him do nothing and barely get snaps on an awful team to see they were wrong, and still threw a pick away on him.
All those years of doing nothing was a gem to them that they could mold into the next great #88

BEGGING THE FOOTBALL GODS to please let the Cowboys find a way to get back in the 4th round!!! Trade the first down and get a 4th or their 2nd or 3rd round pick, hell package a few 5th round picks to get in the 4th round!!

Not sure why we always revisit these things,

it doesn't seem like it's a slow part of the season we got the combine happening the draft coming up free agency and we're gonna go back and talk about past mistakes? and yes 4th rounder was way too much for Mingo, the guys maybe a 6th rounder 7th rounder, would have been easier to take or hell he probably would've been on the street this year.. you could've just picked him up that is something that doesn't even need to be said and we're kicking dead horses around here with these trades..

there are worse trades that have been made in this league at least there is not money given up this is a project... Many talk about the Lance trade like it was bad but umm do we wanna talk about the San Francisco 49ers who originally gave three first rounders for the same guy and Cowboys just kicked his tires for 4th, that one I don't have as big a problem with but yes mingo was not worth a fourth it was a bad trade and I don't know why Jerry did it but you never know the kid could turn out to be solid someday he needs a second chance...

time to move on!!

That's the problem. They didn't target him at all. Schoon produced when he got targets. Tolbert produced when he got targets. McCarthy didn't have any clue what to do with Mingo. Just like many other players.
They targeted him 15 times. He caught 5 of them. Why should they keep going to him if he is that inefficient

So now we are are just blaming the coaches when a player doesnt perform. He wasnt any better in Carolina. Sometimes players are just bad players

I dont think they would just because of Mingo. I think there is a good chance they dont go WR in the top 75 though. The value might not be there with this class.
