Tyler is a 1st round pick, he had to play somewhere on the starting line, ..and there was huge opening at LG (still will be when McGovern has to start)

Makes since to start him out at OG, then eventually ease him into training even more at OT ..until Tyron call it quits,.. or Cowboys calls it quits on Tyron .

With Tyron out all year, or nearly all year depending his recovery. The team needs to make that decision for him. Time to move on.
Or,
If he returns, he then is the ST, if they are going to be in the playoffs. Don't change what got them there. He would be far better coming in to play if / when needed.

I don't think there are too many fans saying keep him. Time to move on, now is that chance. They did it with Dak over Tony. So they can do this also.

As I said, I don't know what to think about Tyler playing OG or moving him out to OT. I will live with the coaches decision and hope for the best.

In my opinion it's a balancing act of knowing what benefits your team most this year.

By moving him out, this will reveal IF he is the long term solution at LT but will also create a weakness at LG again.

To pick up a one year vet FA while keeping him at LG should be equally weighed against the replace from within philosophy as to what will yield the most benefit this year.

Something a vet GM who truly knows his roster would have no problem with but in the case of this team's GM and all the past bad roster decision making that makes me skeptical.
I agree but I think in McCarthys press conference he already had McGovern as the starter due to him being here longer so I don’t know if big mike thinks like we do

As this year’s first round pick, Tyler Smith was drafted as “the replacement for Tyron Smith”. And although it would have been better to give him time to develop and adjust to the NFL game as a LG, circumstances as they are now make that plan mute.

He has had very little actual prep at LT this pre-season, so we should be prepared for some major growing pains, especially at first as he adjusts to the NFL speed and talent. The difference between playing at Tulsa and playing in the NFL is quite an adjustment. But he does have a lot of raw talent. Emphasis on raw.

But if Tyler Smith is the long term answer, we might as well get started finding out. If he isn’t the answer, this organization will have to move LT back to the top of team needs in the draft. The LT position is second only to QB in importance and not an easy one to find plug and play talent.

One other thought- playing Tyler at LT is probably what should be done for long term purposes. But in the short term, be prepared for a lesser level of team performance. It will be tougher to win the East and make the playoffs. Not impossible but much tougher.
Honestly i feel better today thinking it through. Connor might be below verage LG but 16 teams have below average LG and some do pretty well, I think Tyler will hold his own getting penalties here and there.

I feel like this is where we see the coaches influence. Do we have the staff to help the rookie learn. It’s a heck of a situation for the rookie but if he’s game I hope he succeeds. It’s just a lot to ask right away. Guess we’ll find out soon enough.
After he sees all of the speed and moves these cats have in store for him, he is gonna get better but growing pains will be plenty in abundance at this position early on. Moore hopefully schemes around it.

Agreed, time to take the kid gloves off and let TS73 take his nfl lumps while starting. do not pull him if struggling let him learn now.

Big Will Grier fan you must be.

I just hope Daks injury isn't one that affects him next year as well, then we are throwing away two seasons.

100% agree with mr haze...
When I stated almost the exact same thing in another thread I got flamed big time........you get likes...I get flamed. Lol

Won't you please help with this likes famine? For the low, low price of just 1 like per day, you can help needy posters like OGCowboy grow up to be strong, vibrant, and confident contributors here on CowboysZone. But the time to act is now. Don't put it off another day. Won't you please help? Operators are now standing by (in the form of the Like button).

Well, you could be right. I can’t disagree this is a risk.
Yep.

Much more than bad play at left tackle is at risk and in play here.

We lost Dak for most of 2020 (although that can't be blamed on the OL in any way), but also for 2021 when he was clearly not using his legs as part of his game....which he very much needs to do.

He is NOT Aaron Rodgers who can just drop back and do what he likes. I think that's a big part of the disconnect with the FO line of thinking vs reality.

They look at GB with a meh supporting cast on offense and figure they can get away with the same with Prescott......or figure they ought to be able to due to what he is paid. Jerry 100% thinks that way. See: Hudson Houck and not using proper resources on the OL for years.

The fact that Tyler Smith could be thrown in at LT on opening day with very little preparation at the position could lead to nightmare and cause him to lose his confidence. The reports from most who’ve been at training camp suggest he’s not ready to play that position. If he does start the season at LT and can’t get it done he may have to be replaced. He’s been working at guard most of training camp and now he has an injury forcing him to miss valuable reps. The entire OL is a big concern.

I am mixed on this. Yes if he is the LT of the future, then let him play and learn. But to the expense of the season if they really struggle? That is the risk.

I really rather they bring in a vet for LT, and go from there. Yes Tyler placed LT at Tulsa, but he was drafted to be a OG first, is I prefer to leave him there for now.

I agree fully and emphasize the "IF" he is the LT of the future and lean more to bringing in a vet FA as a band aid for this year so as not at the risk of losing an entire season.

This
Hope the staff knows his mental strength.....be a waste of a 1st rounder to shell shock him
It happened w Chaz green...

Keep T.Smith at LG, helps Biadaz, helps LT....helps vrs a A.Donald, etc....schedule loaded with pro bowl DT.
Rotate Ball, Waletzko.....I think Waletzko will grow into quicker than we think...
Run a lot of 12 to help and chip....

The biggest fear having to throw Tyler Smith out there is having it turn into a Chaz Green debacle. What’s really concerning about the situation is that Smith has been practicing at guard most of training camp and because of his injury wasn’t able to get any snaps at LT during our final preseason game. At least had he been able to play Friday night he would’ve gotten his feet wet at LT in a game. The OL we’re going to be playing with on opening day hasn’t played together the entire preseason. We’re going to find out what we’re dealing with in a game that matters against a pretty stout defense on opening day. Better buckle up!

And getting your franchise QB killed.
That is as much on the coaching staff and the QB himself. If he turns his back to his blindside too much, he is liable to spend time recovering.

Prescott was lucky. As a rookie, he caught a team with a good OL and run game so all he really needed to do was execute and make a few plays himself. Now, we may see him doing the "Romo Rhumba" in the pocket to stay off the IR.

He has been served notice. He needs to protect himself and stay aware of the blind side.
