Given the circumstances i have no problem with his whatsoever. He was after all a 1st round pick and 1st round picks should be ready to plug in and play on day one. If not then perhaps they are not worthy of being a 1st round selection. Just my .02.

Yeah he wasn’t blowing anyone away at LG anyway. Put him at LT and keep him there for a decade hopefully. Tyron may play this season IF we make the playoffs but I can’t see him on the roster next season.

I understand the strategy and thought behind it. I just think it's safer to let Smith get good at LG where his reps have been and let our OTs sink/swim until Jerry trades for an OT and eats his crow.

If the LTs get worked each week I think that would quickly expedite a trade.

The left side of our line has to be considered a target for Defensive Coordinators early this season. Tyler and Connor McGovern gonna have big targets on their backs.

Plus Biadasz isn't exactly the Rock of Gibraltar out there either. We are gonna find out from the get go what kind of season this will be.

Well I think it might be rough early. But it takes 17 games now to make a season. There’s a reason don’t name playoff teams in October. Which is why having a coaching staff that can both develop young players AND develop great game plans AND make adjustments to injuries, etc is so important.

Mike McCarthy has an opportunity to prove he really is an excellent HC or just another pretender.

The fact that Tyler Smith could be thrown in at LT on opening day with very little preparation at the position could lead to nightmare and cause him to lose his confidence. The reports from most who’ve been at training camp suggest he’s not ready to play that position. If he does start the season at LT and can’t get it done he may have to be replaced. He’s been working at guard most of training camp and now he has an injury forcing him to miss valuable reps. The entire OL is a big concern.

It could certainly kill a players confidence. I'm hoping for good things, but this could have the opposite effect. Jerry and Lil' anus seem to be selling it hard so it won't really be a surprise if it doesn't go well.

I feel like this is where we see the coaches influence. Do we have the staff to help the rookie learn. It’s a heck of a situation for the rookie but if he’s game I hope he succeeds. It’s just a lot to ask right away. Guess we’ll find out soon enough.
Many here at CZ state the OLine coach Joe Philbin is not the guy to get Cowboys squad up to snuff - let alone helping a rookie learn and eventually succeed in the league.

That is as much on the coaching staff and the QB himself. If he turns his back to his blindside too much, he is liable to spend time recovering.

Prescott was lucky. As a rookie, he caught a team with a good OL and run game so all he really needed to do was execute and make a few plays himself. Now, we may see him doing the "Romo Rhumba" in the pocket to stay off the IR.

He has been served notice. He needs to protect himself and stay aware of the blind side.

It’s on the OC just as much. You think he’s changing the offense to suit the situation? Lol

Anything either of the Joneses sell hard usually doesn’t go well. I remember how hard Stephen tried selling our WR group heading into the 2018 season. He talked about how Deonte Thompson could take the top off a defense. He ended up with 14 catches for just over 100 yards before we dumped him. Lol

If they put Smith at LT, I see a high percentage of run plays, since that's more about being aggressive than reactive.

Steele does appear more to be an outlier or even fluke as to his developmental skills because the whole oline down the stretch last season looked very poorly coached.

They could always trade 2 firsts in October! That's just smart management.

I'm totally not sold on him but, I can't help but completely agree.

It's time to see if he has what it takes. Tyron's career is sadly at its end, they have to know if his replacement is on the roster.

My ideal scenario would be getting Fisher on a 2 year deal and keeping Tyler at LG. This way you could observe Fisher's performance as to if he has enough juice to commit to long term.

If it's determined he's merely a stop gap solution but still serviceable, then have Tyler do the whole off season and all preseason games next year in open competition with Fisher.

Bout the best I got.
Just not a fan of throwing the kid out there for the whole season with no game snaps at LT whatsoever.

As this year’s first round pick, Tyler Smith was drafted as “the replacement for Tyron Smith”. And although it would have been better to give him time to develop and adjust to the NFL game as a LG, circumstances as they are now make that plan mute.

He has had very little actual prep at LT this pre-season, so we should be prepared for some major growing pains, especially at first as he adjusts to the NFL speed and talent. The difference between playing at Tulsa and playing in the NFL is quite an adjustment. But he does have a lot of raw talent. Emphasis on raw.

But if Tyler Smith is the long term answer, we might as well get started finding out. If he isn’t the answer, this organization will have to move LT back to the top of team needs in the draft. The LT position is second only to QB in importance and not an easy one to find plug and play talent.

One other thought- playing Tyler at LT is probably what should be done for long term purposes. But in the short term, be prepared for a lesser level of team performance. It will be tougher to win the East and make the playoffs. Not impossible but much tougher.
Bob, I love your posts , but have to agree to disagree on this one.
A better option IMHO would be to sign or trade for a one year stop gap LT for this year.
I think Tyler at LT this season could destroy his confidence and or get Dak killed.
Also as you mentioned, the team would have a drop off in performance.

He was drafted as a little bit of a project. I think people are going way too hard with “the future is now”. Mickey already wrote this very sentiment. This Oline was having problems even with Tyron. The overall unit is a problem. This learning curve won’t help matters. Young player who is very green. You finally have a D ready to take off and on offense they’re going to throw a guy who isn’t close to ready to the wolves! Let’s hope Zach Martin will be enough. lol I know defenses will be coming hard at that blind side. From Biadiscz on down it’s a huge gamble.

Excellent post that truly describes what is going on with where this team is at right now.

There has got to be a place for Ball unfortunately and that place will not be on the bench.
Maybe hard to accept for most, but Ball is making this 53 and outside of a trade or signing a fish that probably wouldnt be much better when it matters the most, Im betting Ball is our starting LT game 1.
Please feel free to call me out on this, I have a lot of spare time these days and usually available.

That sounds like a solid idea. :)
