Why was Byron Jones rated so low before the combine?

Another guy people passed on because of his film but great in the combine was Dontari Poe. That worked out quite well so far

To be honest most draft grades does not mature until a week before the draft, except for actual teams draft boards. Heck Tyron Smith, Von Miller, Aronald Driver... All was drafted higher than their intial grade. Also we drafted the guy at 27 that is kinda late.

Let me put it this way

I'm as big a proponent of taking front 7 esp DL high but cb/fs are very difficult to come by

If he can become our starting cb (preferably FS) for the next decade, I will not complain about passing on brown

A true FS will take this defense to the next level

The concern is legitimate that he is a freak athlete, hard worker by all accounts and very smart so why did he not dominate against lesser competition at UConn?

He had a 26 passer rating against him. Sounds dominant to me.

I appreciate your points OP. I've been saying the same things for over a week now.

I wouldn't, however, compare him to Claiborne. Not yet at least. This kid is a very hard worker and a student on and off the field. That's why, even though I don't agree with the pick and think he is overrated and was over-drafted, I still think he has a chance to be a good player. Just not number one corner good.

And ANYONE trying to say his combine didn't greatly affect where they ranked him, is just blowing hot air and shouldn't be given the time of day.

I love this thread.

He's actually rated a 99.9 on that measurement. He's called a 3 Sigma athlete. Only corner to merit that tag. He's one of five now in the league. The others are Calvin Johnson, JJ Watt, Evan Mathis and Lane Johnson. Calling him an athlete is like calling a Ferrari a car.

1) That is pretty awesome
2) Your avatar is awesome. Had no idea it was a gif until I clicked on it.

I'm sure it's been mentioned, but the most obvious explanations are that either 1. people are revising their draft grades based on his combine numbers, or 2. people are revisiting the player because of his combine numbers and revising their draft grades because of his play.

The team's gone out of its way to say that this is not a guy who's just an athlete and that his tape backs up his draft grade. And Broadus and Brugler were both high on this guy for weeks prior to the draft for his ability to play CB. Paul Pasqualoni coached him, and we had a scout who knew his position coaches fairly well according to Jerry, so I'd say it was a good bet in this case that it wasn't a decision made just on his combine performance.

I posted somewhere on here that his game footage was underwhelming and I got attacked...
I don't know really though, we're just gonna have to wait and see him on the field. He came off to me as a guy with speed/athleticism and some fundamentals but not a physical guy who's gonna fly to the ball every play. I hope he proves me wrong but I think it's safe to say Gregory will be the best player out of this draft for us.

Another guy people passed on because of his film but great in the combine was Dontari Poe. That worked out quite well so far

Agreed. Dontari Poe combine numbers rose his draft stock through the roof and look at him now.

Love his athleticism but he doesnt look to good on his highlight tapes. But hes smart and I think he will be a good player in a few years.

the guy played two years at safety and a year and half at corner. he was drafted for versatility, coachability, character and athleticism. lots of upside and at the back of the first round to get a talent like him is pretty good.

If the media scouts set their numbers and left them the way they we're that day they wouldn't get many page clicks. I also suspect that the media scouts watch mostly the power conferences because that's where most of the players that people want ot know about come from.

I still bet that team boards don't fly around all over the place like media boards do. Combine/workout stats are used to confirm athleticism that they already had seen would be my bet. I do wonder how many college scouts that the average team has? I bet its more then the staff of media scouts.

Sorry, but the math doesn't add up here. If he played to that athleticism he woud've been picked higher than 27. Nobody lets a freak corner who proves it on the field fall to the bottom of the first round.

Where was Cromartie drafted?

I would take a guy like this with insane athleticism and great smarts with Excellent character every time. His eventual position will be Free safety so that athleticism will translate better onto the field.

I haven't watched any tape, so forgive me

But his stats are impressive

Only surrendered 2 tds in two years and gave up a 26 qb rating last year

What does the tape show?
