I could be wrong but isn't SMU still under the death penalty meaning they can't play in any bowls and compete for a title? Why would Jones want to go there? Hawaii is obviously a nicer locale than Dallas and that's no slam against Dallas, cmon we are talking Hawaii here fellas! And his conference will always be weak. And I'm not convinced an undefeated WAC team will not get another BCS bid especially since it's so difficult for a team to go undefeated in general. The WAC is an easy enough conference that a half-decent team like Hawaii can go undefeated

Is Hawaii just not paying Jones well? Why the heck would any sane individual go to SMU?

Well the AD at Hawaii is a freaking moron, talking about getting an extension doen for June but not really doing anything about it. This may be Jones' way of forcing Hawaii's hand.

But SMU is no longer under the death penalty.

Hey,Windward. Just want to say I'm impressed with your teams spirit. They never gave up or quit. You can be proud of them. It's no disgrace to lose to the dogs. I said about a month back that,IMO, Georgia was playing the best football in the nation, and I believe they are in the top two or three right now. Although I moved to Georgia almost six years ago,I have no allegiance to them, but have gotten a good chance to watch them develop in the last few years. What they've done is impressive, and, even though they are a young team, wait till you see what they have coming up as far as freshmen and redshirt players. Next year should be fun to watch for the Georgia fans.

Again, your guys have got a lot of heart. Be proud of 'em!

SMU still under the death penalty? Geez... welcome to 30 years ago...

SMU was ripped off in that respect. The NCAA killed that program while letting others go that were just as bad, if not worse...

The lure of a job like SMU is that you get the opportunity to recruit DFW kids, which is largely the hotbed of college recruiting in the state, along with those kids in East Texas...

It probably won't work out for him, but he will have money backing him if he should have some success...

I think June Jones' offense can work in Conference USA considering the success he had against conference usa teams at Hawaii. It will take time, though. SMU needs to have som e patience and give him a few years if they go that route.

That was like 1990 dude no they have no bans or anything in place it destroyed the program and you will never see it ever again. The last part of the banned ended what 17 years ago or so

According to what I have heard Jones is in the last year of his contract and many promises have been made about improving the football complex at Hawaii and those promises have not been kept. SMU is offering a big pay check and some promises of their own regarding the football program

I'm fairly certain, having David Stanley sitting facing a WFAA news camera, while pulling out a crumpled paperbag stuffed w/ money, simulating how payments were made to players, didn't sit very well w/ the NCAA.

That pretty much sealed SMU's fate when that aired, over and over. Not to mention them lying to the NCAA about when payments stopped, after they'd admitted their guilt.

That's Herman Frazier, the Hawaii athletic director, for you. He talks big but rarely delivers. He's the one responsible for Hawaii's cupcake schedule this year.

He's run off the best coach in school basketball history witout a decent backup plan, settling for a 57 year old lifelong assistant.

About the best thing he's done is hire Mike Trapasso for UH baseball (now we can make the NCAA Tournament like we did in the 80s)

If we lose June, then the outcry may be enough to ensure the dismissal of Frazier.(hopefully) It's not a big raise that June is looking for, rather he is looking for a substantial increase to Hawaii's football budget which is a paltry 2.2 million. Our recruiting budget is pitiful. Our weight rooms look less impressive than a 24 hour fitness club. Unfortunately I'm pretty skeptical that Hermie will get the job done.

well, it appears that June Jones is on his way. Reports are that he resigned from Hawaii and is headed to SMU.

That's why I put a question mark behind that statement because I didn't know the answer. For whatever reason, I thought that program was put on some permanent ban hence the term "death penalty" I stand corrected.

When taking this into consideration, I can understand the appeal of going to SMU because he would be able to recruit out of Dallas.
