Rightfully many of our fans are questioning, 36 year old G who has been out of the NFL for 18 months?
"Why should I be excited, I am very skeptical and/or curious."
If this is you, keep reading.
1) Brian Waters signed with Pats on September 4th, one day later than the Cowboys signed him on September 3rd, so he has proven he can miss TC and go on to be a Pro Bowler and help lead that team to the Super Bowl.
2) For those who are concerned of, why did we get him and no one else? Waters quit the Pats stating he only wanted to play in Texas, leaving us and the Texans. Patriots even offered him 4-5 million to play for them, we got him at 1.7 million.
3) We signed Livings for 5 yrs / 18 mil, we signed Waters for 1 yr / 1.7 mil (I believe this is finalized?), even if Waters is a shell of himself.. this is still GREAT value.
4) He was rated the #1 pass blocking Guard and the #4 Guard overall by PFF 18 months ago.
5) He adds a veteran presence to an OL that lacked such pedigree. Currently Smith, Leary, Frederick, and Free were young guys who do not have any Pro Bowls or Super Bowl appearances. Waters is known for his physicality on the line, this type of behavior is contagious! You better believe when Frederick and Leary see a 36 year old punking DLs they are going to be even more motivated.
6) Never had an injury history.
7) This guy played with Brady and Belichick. Adding someone with that kind of experience, combined with his caliber of play is a no-lose situation.
8) Those worried about him being with his family for 18 months and he won't be in shape. Cowboys worked him out and sources have constantly said he is in football playing shape. What would you prefer for a 35 year old G to do to maximize his potential at age 36? Battle 280 pounders on the week to week or be at peace with his family to relax his mind and body?
What I am trying to say, guys, is that this is a ZERO-risk, VERY HIGH-reward. We are playing on house money and have the chance to triple up off this. If we lose the hand, it is all good.. we are at worse the same as where we were before. However the chances are overwhelming that we at least slightly improved our line here, and for the optimistic there is a chance we might have something special here.
BE EXCITED! Go Cowboys!
