Why Zack Martin Reminds Me Of A NBA Hall of Famer - Scouting Report

For the third time in four years, the Dallas Cowboys have drafted an offensive lineman in the first round. And while it’s not the sexy pick many desired, it’s the right pick, even for a team that is in desperate need of defensive help. But before I dive head first into my review of Zack Martin and why he reminds me of a certain NBA Hall of Famer, let’s take a trip down memory lane. Go back to November 14, 2010, Jason Garrett’s first game as a head coach. Can you name the five starting offensive lineman in that game? If not, I will help you. Their offensive line looked like this: (with their age at the time of the game and their weight)

LT: Doug Free
(26 years, 9.9 months – 323 lbs.)
LG: Kyle Kosier (31 years, 11.6 months – 305 lbs.)
OC: Andre Gurode (32 years, 8.3 months – 320 lbs.)
OG: Leonard Davis (32 years, 2.3 months – 355 lbs.)
RT: Marc Colombo (32 years, 1.2 months – 320 lbs.)

As you can see, Jason Garrett took over an aging, declining, heavy offensive line. And in less than 4 years, he has turned that unit into one of the youngest groups in the NFL that also has a very realistic chance to be one of the best for a long time. The average age of the team’s offensive line on opening day in 2014 will be 25 years old. This has been a quick rebuild of the offense line and the Cowboys should reap the benefits of that now and in the future.
But back to the player that the Cowboys drafted in 2014. Before we get to anything on the field, I want to take a look at Zack Martin’s college credentials and find out why Jason Garrett believes he is the “Right-Kind-Of Guy” for this Cowboys team:

52 starts at Notre Dame, 50 at left tackle. Most in school’s history.

Won 36 games at Notre Dame, only 3 players have won more in their career at the school.

2 time team captain. Only has happened 18 times in the history of Notre Dame football

Best player on a offensive line that allowed only 8 sacks in 2013.

Voted Best Offensive Lineman On Notre Dame for three straight years. A first at Notre Dame

Named 2 Time on the All-Independence First Team

MVP of the Pinstripe Bowl

Coach Brian Kelly said that “(Martin) was the best offensive lineman I have ever coached, and I’ve had some great ones.”

Father played at Kentucky and comes from a highly competitive football family.

What good is a line if we can't commit to running the football......time will tell to see if these coaches can control themselves.

Might have been the safest pick of the draft although I could argue Matthews rivals him. Only reason he fell that far was because he was projected to G. G and C are the safest picks in the draft these days. He's a worker bee.

When the OL is in pass protection 65% of their offensive snaps (pretty normal these days) then the run game is less of a concern. That doesn't mean its not important nor should the Cowboys not emphasize it more.

Really, this is a thread for complaining about the running game? If you can't be happy about the OL at this point, I don't know what to tell you.

Oh, and "pass protection" is the obvious answer to your earlier question.

Absolutely luv the Zack Martin pick. Brian Waters thoughts improve the choice with each thread/post. He was the right choice in the 1st round an A+ grade, a perfect scenario.

Pro ready from Day 1 he thoroughly dominated Aaron Donald just like every other DLineman he ever faced in College.

In 2009 Seattle was 5 and 11 and by 2013, they won the SB. In 2010, San Francisco was 6 and 10 and by 2012 they're playing in the SB. In 2009, Baltimore was 9 and 7 and in 2012 they win the SB. In 1989 we were 1 and 15 and by 1992, we won the SB. See where I'm going with this? And we're supposed to be impressed in some way because "Garrett" revamped our OL in 4 years using 3 first round picks? Color me unimpressed. I'd be more appreciative if he built a winning program.

Perhaps it's pathologically cathartic. I was thinking psychologically but perhaps its that and cathartic for their bowels. It's not healthy to be full of it.

and yet, this site needs to make available as many NFL Fleet Enema's as is humanly possible to clear all of that out....

Do you know how those teams "built winning programs?"

I don't see where he is complaining about the line. I would say that he is questioning the play-calling.

The fact that ND OL only gave up 8 sacks is even more impressive when you realize their QB - Tommy Rees - was about as immobile as any QB in college football.
