In Baltimore Frank won the Triple Crown and MVP in 66. Went to 4 WS and won 2 in his 6 yrs there. So he was a big part of their success.

I know Brooks is debatable, but not for Orioles fans :D

Frank had great seasons in Baltimore, there is no doubt but he played longer in Cincy, was the ROY, was the MVP in 61, had more All Star seasons with the Reds and won his only Gold Glove with the Reds in 58.

Brooks, well, I understand. You could offer an O's fan any amount of money in the world and they would turn it downt if it meant agreeing that Brooks Robinson was not the greatest 3rd baseman that ever lived.

Frank is the only guy to win the MVP in both leagues. Unless somebody else has done it recently.

As great a player as Brooks was he is an even greater person. He is by far the nicest pro athlete I have ever met. And everybody says that.

Schmidt was the greatest ever.

It would be closer between Schmidt and George Brett IMO. I never saw Eddie Mathews play so I can't speak on him but oldtimers say he was every bit as good and maybe better. However, I do think Mike Schmidt was the best all around 3rd baseman. Excellent fielding 3rd baseman in his own right, hit for power, hit for average. He was really good.

I do think that if we are just talking about best fielding 3rd baseman, that's probably Robinson.

No question that Mathews would have to be in the mix.

Yeah, Brooks would have to rate the best defensively, but Schmidt was no slouch. And really Mathews wasn't a bad third baseman either.

One guy who should mentioned as being up there is Craig Nettles.

When I was a kid in 7th grade our family was over at one of my dad's old classmates and one of the daughters in that family told me Brooks Robinson's son was in her class at school. I didnt believe her so after we ate we rode bikes over to his house. Brooks was out side mowing his grass with a lawnboy push mower. I could not believe it was actually him. We went and bought baseballs and came back to get him to autograph them. Super nice guy. He made us kids feel like he owed us thanks for coming to see him. He was the same way every other time I met him. That was a super cool experience for this kid!

Yeah, Nettles was a great fielding 3rd Baseman. Wade Boggs was another one. Chipper Jones. All really good.

That's a pretty cool story WP. Probably never see something like that today and it's a real shame.

I always liked Nettles.. Back in that era he was one of my favorite Yankees. Made some great plays in those WS'

Schmidt was the greatest ever.

When it comes to the homeruns he is no doubt.

A few years ago I got an email invite for business owners to meet Mike Schmidt at a local car dealership. Not sure how I got on the list but I had time that day and took a couple baseballs to get signed. He's still cocky even now as an older guy and he looked like he could still play. He was a nice guy, but cocky. I gave one ball to the director of my kid's school who is from Philly and kept the other.

Schmidt was more than just home runs. He won 10 Gold Gloves, and was a 3 time NL MVP.

And even though Gold Gloves are like Pro Bowl in football (not necessarily a key indicator of elite skill), he does hold the record for assists in a season for a third baseman.

If I was starting a team and Brooks wasnt available, I'd have no problem going with Mike :D

I always felt no ball would get past him.
His dives are embedded in my brain.

No question for me, Schmidt. I liked Brett just wish he had more power.

Also, always liked Ron Cey, not because he was great but I grew up watching him on WGN when games were hard to find on TV.

Steve Garvey as well but he wasn't just a 3rd baseman.

Gotta be honest. George Brett was an excellent ball player and a good guy. He's in the discussion IMO.

Without a doubt.

He was yankee killer though.

I got a kick out them taking homerun away .... I have to be honest lol
