Look, I don’t want to lose Dan Quinn, but he’s likely gone if he wants a HC job. Which is exactly what reliable Cowboys insiders like David Moore and Bob Sturm have reported this week. It’s not about the money for him now- it’s about being a HC again.

But losing assistant coaches is a normal occurrence when your team is winning. Over the great history of this franchise, we have lost some great assistants to head coaching jobs. Dan Reeves, Mike Ditka, Gene Stallings, Dave Wannstedt, Butch Davis, Sean Payton, just to name a few. It’s a normal occurrence when your team is winning. I expect no amount of Jerry money can keep Dan Quinn if he has the head coaching bug again.

Will McClay is the guy we can least afford to lose. The quality of drafts and player personnel improvements over the last decade is a straight line to McClay. The much improved talent level of this organization is due To McClay’s ability to scout and identify talent.

Put it this way - Without Will McClay, this organization is back to fantasy football drafts with Jerry and Giggles. Remember the “special teams draft“ of 2009? Remember the WR trades for Joey Galloway and Roy Williams?

If that gives you a sick feeling like me, we all need to pray Jerry either decides to name WIll McClay the new GM of the Cowboys or that McClay continues to want to be the man in the shadows while Jerry and Giggles get the “credit”.

How much do the top 3 GM's make per year...total package after bonuses and incentives?

If Jerry is willing to marginally surpass all other GM's pay for Will....would he leave?

I think there would have to be a serious issue amongst Jerry, Stephen and Will. Do you think Jerry/Stephen have over written Will's suggestions enough that Will thinks he can build a better team elsewhere? Or that Will thinks the Cowboys would be a much better team if the Jones' would have listened him on past moves?

I just dont know. Money talks. I dont think Will cares about limelight. Everyone around the league knows hes the man.

Yeah like I just said, we lose will, we get Johnny football, and Baker Mayfield type guys!!! Not smart guys that you can have here and possibly be on the ring of honor like Zack Martin

I agree. I know there are some posters around here that don't want to give McClay his flowers, but I will. I think he has done an overall great job for this organization. I get it, there have been some misses and some chances that burnt the team, but that's the draft for you. Happens to every single front office around the league.

I couldn't imagine handing over future drafts to Jerry and his little sidekick. I'm sure there is some Jones Jr floating around somewhere that Jerry would appoint to take over in McClay's absence. eek

Will is basically the GM without the official title.
They look to him for serious input on who to draft. Hell, that leaked clip of Mazi vs the guard shows the input he has. It's not sole power, but over the years his influence here has grown.

For him to leave, it would mean he wanted a fresh start. Here, if it's a bad draft pick, the blame goes to Jerry. If it's a good one, he gets the credit.

Not sure McClay leaves. Hes here on his title for a long time. Everyone knows hes the real GM. He doesnt seem like a guy that wants to be in the media spotlight all the time.

He also has a deep relationship with the Jones Family. Would be quite a shock if he leaves.

McClay has all of the job security he could want with the Cowboys, so the only reasons for him to leave would be if he has issues with Jerry/Stephen or he wants more personal credit.

The smart move for McClay would be to use the interest from other teams and the idea of him leaving to leverage more money out of Jerry and a longer contract extension.

Nice post Bob. I would encourage everyone to go watch the Deep Blue War Room documentaries. There are 2 of them. If you want to see who is doing what in the draft, that gives you a good idea. McClay is NOT the one gambling away some of these 2nd and 3rd round picks for high injury or low character crap shoots.

I don't agree. If he leaves, next man up. Organizations of all types lose people. They can all be replaced. I hope he gets his opportunity, he's earned it.
No reason to worry about something we can't control.
Just my opinion.

I really wish that McClay were not only retained but also given the full GM title. He currently does not make the actual picks but does do the necessary deep scouting dive into players for the draft.

Jerry and Mike Brown of the bengals are the only owners who feel compelled to make the actual draft picks on draft day. Jerry has done some good things for sure but his compulsion to be the centerpiece of the organization at 81 years old is just weird at this point.

I agree I dont' want to lose him but I don't think if he leaves it's just Jerry running the show. They would get someone in here to replace McClay. Someone would still have his role here.

I hear this next man up crap way too much
What was it like before McClay?
Tell me how did next man up work for the Pats when Brady left?

Yep. There are only 2 reasons I can see McClay going somewhere. He wants the FINAL word on football moves - and honestly I really doubt that's a big motivator. We all know Jerry and Stephen are involved, but I really do believe there is a very collaborative environment in the front office and they do work well together. "Final" word is overrated when they seem to be philosophically in lock step.

The other reason is legacy - there are presently 26 'contributors" into the Hall of Fame that were execs/front office folk, and only a handful of those folk were NOT actually Owners/Founders. If McClay has any aspiration to really cement legacy, that's the only way to do it. I don't think he would ever get the Tex Shramm treatment in Dallas even if we went on a 2-3 championship run. Could be wrong!

There are posters here that don't realize that McClay does everything that a gm does.

Just maybe he wants more; a chance to do it all without Jerry always there looking over his shoulder
Bottom line is that no matter what YOU and others claim Jerry still has the final say not Will
Maybe he wants that

It is likely that you don't know what you are talking about and McClay gets a raise and stays with the Cowboys.

Did McClay get offers last year? First time I remember reading this.
For those of you who think McClay will not get lifted... see Jerry Jones interview. Claims 15-20 requests for McClay, although not honoring all them right now. Sneaky. Approve the Panthers and Commanders. :muttley:

Jerry also commented in same interview about a story from his lobbyist days which couldn't post because it had the dreaded 'P word' but he made it pretty clear that he felt Cowboys would find someone to replace anyone who was hired.

Could be the last of the McClay days?
