I spelled his first name wrong, but I did not know.

Interesting -- there are several articles out there today about how Blank feels he needs to go with an African American coach b/c the majority of Falcons ticket holders are African Americans.

If that is the case then all signs are pointing toward Singletary being hired on New Year's Eve.

And to me that would be dumb.

I am Black, but I still think you do your team a diservice by looking at Race and not the best candidate for the job.

He should definately give them a shot at an interview but he needs to hire the best candidate.

And that just might be a very good hire for them.

I just went to the Atlanta Falcon's forum and they are saying that Jim Mora Jr. said he would be open to talk about re-taking the HC'ing job. They didn't have a link, but they said PFT said it.

That was my prediction at the beginning of the other thread. A high-integrity NFL guy whom they interviewed last year.

Notice I reported on an INTERIM Head Coach, not a permanent one. Singletary could well be the guy. I'm certainly not saying that's out the door. I am talking ONLY about the last 3 games of this season.

as usual the uneducated one misses the point. Zimmer was a 4-3 guy. A bend but don't break tampa 2 guy. He is not and never will be a 3-4 guy.
It takes a different mindset.

Tampa 2? Since when?

Our defense was always a cover 4 look from what I remember when we were winning and he evolved from that.

I dont remember him as a cover 2 guy off the top of my head, I remember him and campo as aggressive coaches who would play cover 4.

They should hire Hugh Jass, he would have alot in common with the owner of that franchise.

Of course, given the fan base in ATL, you could argue that there is a unique marketing opportunity here...

True, from a marketing stand point, I agree 100%

Personally, I think if they field a winner, they will come.

I still believe he needs to take his time, do an extensive search and hire the guy he thinks will do the best job.

I was interpreting that as an Interim hire -- nobody thinks Hue Jackson is a head coach candidate at this point. I was just saying that ethnicity is very much on the team's radar since b/c of their fan base. Certainly a reasonable consideration for a team with 50-some percent African American ticket holders. That's just pure marketing.

BTW - they went with Emmit Thomas -- he's 66 and never been an HC so he has no chance for the job in the future.

I think the Falcons have a unique opportunity here -- they have a decent and experienced staff in place -- Zimmer, for all the hate he gets here, is a good X and O guy -- that's Singletary's weakness. You put Mike S in as the HC there and keep much of the present staff and you've got a good thing going.

Ahh, but you've hit the nail on the head there - "field a winner" -- Blank knows that isn't going to happen so he's got to have something positive going on to keep seats in the stands.

I wish they would hire Deion Sanders with buchannon and keyshawn as assistants.

That way I would have tremendous time laughing at them and most importantly they could get off my tv telling me how great they are.

oh and hire salisbury as qb coach.

Another good point.

But, I would respond with, Blank needs to look beyond 1 season and think about the franchise further down the road. Yes, they will absolutely suck next year, no doubt about it.

Now, I am sure you can find a Black coach that will do a wonderful job and win, but he has a responsibility to the fanbase to put the best product on the field, including the coaching staff. I really think he would be limiting himself if he made "race" a major factor in the hiring process.

I wouldn't be surprised if "Race" still is a major factor in hiring for coaching jobs but I think you limit yourself when you do that.

I tell people here at work all the time, If I was business owner, I don't care what color you are or what you look like. Making me money and making my business run as smooth and efficiently as possible is all I would care about ;) .

Now, I don't know if Blank would be totally wrong for playing to the masses by getting a Black Head Coach, I am just saying he would be limiting himself.

If he were hiring a coach simply because he was Black then, yeah, he sure would be limiting himself. However, as we all know, Singletary has HC written all over him, although he will need to grow into the position. But he's got solid assistants that would likely stay there and the expectations will be relatively low for a year or two. He's a hot candidate with name recognition who provides a marketing opportunity that say, Ron Rivera or Norm Chow or any of the usual rehashed candidates does not. He's a great motivator. For a demoralized team and a demoralized fan base, he seems to be an outstanding fit on so many levels.

Good stuff.

Hard to argue what you have written.

what a slap in the face for Zimmer.

Falcons turn to Thomas as interim head coach
NFL.com

Emmitt Thomas
Atlanta Falcons
Defensive Backs coach
NFL Season: 27th
With Falcons: 6th

The Atlanta Falcons have selected their defensive backs coach, Emmitt Thomas, as the team's interim head coach, according to NFL Network's Adam Schefter.

The 64-year-old Thomas has been with the Falcons since 2002. Following a 13-year NFL career as a defensive back with the Kansas City Chiefs, he has been coaching at both the college and pro ranks since 1979.

Prior to joining the Falcons, he had NFL stints with the Cardinals, Commanders, Eagles, Packers and Vikings. This will be his first stint as a head coach.

honestly is anyone surprised? Zimmer's a boob

the Rams reportedly were so unimpressed with him they didnt even bother to call him back...I think the Chargers interviewed him too, look who they hired instead

and now he cant even get the "interim" job
