With all the talk of Melton possibly coming here because hes from Dallas and has played for RM got me thinking about will RM even be here after next season? Even with or without Kiffin being here.

I hope so. So many of the moves on defense have been because Marinelli is able to make magic with sub par players. These players are not a long term solution. So if he leaves after this season, it might be back to square one.

It's entirely possible that the entire coaching staff is gone when the 2015 season starts so I think Jerry is taking a wait and see approach right now when it comes to coach's contracts.

That was magic???????????

The cult of Marinelli is OUT OF CONTROL.

The answer to the OP is that he will get cleared out with the rest of the losers after this season.

I wish I could give more likes per post.

I didn't know much about Marinelli prior to this year. I know he coached the Bears D a few years ago when they were good, but also highly overrated. I keep hearing how he can "coach up" scrubs and turn them into All Pros. This makes absolutely no sense to me. I saw a pitiful DL last year. A DL so bad that it made the rest of the defense look bad and was the main contributing factor to the worst D in NFL history. Some magic, Rod!

The only player who excelled last year was Hatcher, and I give all the credit to Hatcher because he has always been the most underrated player on this team and was finally given a chance to shine. He wasted years sitting behind guys like Ratliff, Spears, Coleman and Bowen. Not to mention, the switch to the 4-3 helped, but he was great his final year in the 3-4 too.

Fans will believe anything they want. Somehow Rod is a messiah who can coach up anyone, but the injuries were too devastating for him to overcome. But how come the injuries weren't an excuse when Rob Ryan was here? Rob Ryan was able to make an entire defense overachieve, with injuries in the secondary, LBers and DL.

Bottom line, Rod Marinelli is a nobody until he proves otherwise. This guy hasn't coached up squat. And I blame him for being so content on defense prior to last year's draft. "We don't need to draft DL. Heck, the meeting room is overcrowded. Besides, I can turn water into wine." Gimme a break, Rod. Half the fans on CZ (the sensible ones) could have told you prior to last year that DL was a major area of need.

I am not saying Marinelli is a miracle worker but he is doing the best he can with some guys that should not even be in the league. He had zero talent last year and the guys played hard and he came up with Selvie which was a nice find. Maybe he could do some good things if we bring in some talented kids this summer that will take to his coaching style, which by most accounts, is excellent. He is well respected and we could do a lot worse than RM as our D-Coord IMO.

I hope JJ throws some money his way and allows him to be successful - I also hope JJ does his best to support him and get him some players.

And a lot of that was his fault, unless he wanted more players and Kiffin just overruled him. We avoided the position completely, while undergoing a massive philosophical change in the defensive line.

From free agency, to the draft, to undrafted free agency, we added a net of zero. His hands are not clean of that huge mess. Unless he was just quiet, he was just as complicit as everyone else thinking the roster was set.

We are at square one. We had one of the worst defenses in the league.

I say he should be promoted to head coach. I heard he did some record breaking things as head coach previously!

I think he signs an extension. He's not leaving if we make the playoffs. Which this division is wide open.
