I agree, if Dallas wants Konz they will have to trade up for him.

It wasnt that the small guys in the middle wont work. We just had no quality in the middle and as of right now we still have no quality.

I agree but we were stuck with small OGs so the coaching staff said lets prtect the small OGs as much as possible and run zone blocking.

If they can get a big strong OGs I think they will go back to the power OL.

I just wonder why Dallas didn't go after Wimbley then.

I mean if anyone knows who is better it should be Matt Eberflus who spent two years with Wimbley and one with Spencer. Also Ryan who spent a year with them both.

Sorry but I trust Eberfus and Ryan over Strum.

If they wanted him I thnk they could have gotten them. We could have dropped the tag on SPencer and sign Wimbley to that deal.

yeah thats why I like the FA OL signings. we got a Center and OG that can start and let our young guys develop. We can still draft a OG in the first 2 rounds and a Center in the later rounds. LEt them develop and then we have a good young OL. I like Nagy and Killa at Center bit they just arent ready, I like Arkin who I think needs another full year before he will be ready.
Then I like the idea of getting a day one starting OL in the first two rounds(Decastro,Glenn,Zietler,Brooks) and a Center later(Blake) to develop.

I don;t know how you can say that. Felix best years came behind a big OL. Murrey came in and ran great when Holland was at LG and we went to more traditional blcoking.
Free played better in past years when we weren't running zone blocking.
Smith is a rookie who didn't run zone at USC.

I think Free and Smith has the ability to run zone but I think they can run the traditional power blocking as well.

I wish I was a fly on the wall at Valley Ranch. The decision the Cowboys are making seem a little odd. You see some direction, then you see other stuff that just doesn't seem to make since. They obviously have some type of plan in place, it just doesn't seem cut and dry from the outside though.

I dont think they have any intention on signing Spencer long term, Stephen basically said as much. They need him for another year or possibly not at all if we draft his replacement.

This team is in the midst of a serious youth movement. I think we should just have some faith with JG and see how it all develops. There will be bumps along the way, like with the OL last season.

This, I think Dallas will target Ingram and Mercilus(hopefully in a trade back) to play a year behind Spencer and then become the starter next year.

There is a plan in place, it can't happen in one year, it will take time. Fans just can't be patient

Yes, it is fine to toss out underperforming old vets and bring in some young blood with more upside.

However, we have two marquee players who are at their peaks and may start declining soon in Romo and Ware. They are at the two toughest positions in the roster to fill - edge pass rusher and QB. Their time is now but the rest of team isn't up to snuff. If we go too young those players will mature too late for Ware's peak especially. Once you lose that special player it is back to the drawing board.

That's why I think it is so important to find a complimentary pass rusher for Ware today. I don't want to take a chance on a rookie who may or may not be an effective pass rusher in 3 years. We need one now because of Ratliff's decline. FA hands us a good one in Wimbley who is still young and affordable ($7M/yr for a guy who can get double digit sacks and play all 3 downs is not a lot of money, $13M guaranteed is not a lot of money) and we pass on him to keep a player that we know is not good enough.

I know some will say Ryan had experience with Wimbley but I think Wimbley was coming off of an injury. He subsequently had two pretty good years in Oakland as the main pass rush threat.

Anyhow, I think it was a mistake not to pursue him but time will tell.

That's roughly 7m per year. Earlier in the year I thought it'd cost us about that to keep Spencer, if we wanted him.

However, Wimbley has been far more productive than Spencer has, regardless of the system he's been in. Hindsight being 20/20, I'd much rather have let Spencer walk and signed Wimbley, but no sense in crying over spilled cap space now.

The real question is, if we want to keep Spencer long term it will be a roughly similar type of deal. Is he worth it?

The problem in your querry, is that for this season, the team is better served by a more economical salary picture. It still needs to redo the contract for Mike Jenkins as well...and then there is the single year deal for Pool.

Kind of rediculous. I'd much rahter take my chances in the draft. With Spencer we're close to the same annual salary but are only on the hook for one year. Let's upgrade DE and LOLB in the draft.
