Winners and Whiners

Read the bios on Ivie and Carroll. They fit the Rod mold to the T. High motor guys who are always around the ball.

They could beat out Thornton who is due a modest 3, 4, 4 million over 3 years.

Ivie is the new Nick Hayden for Rod. Book it

Also it sounds like Ivie was held back by a read and react scheme, like Tapper was at OK.

Winners - our team ! Can you imagine the competition at training camp this year ?
From photo's I have seen, Lucky has bulked up quite a bit. I am not giving Switzer his spot, he will have to go and take it. And if he does, all the better for the team. Same as most of these picks, they will be challenging vets for their spots this year from Taco to the 3 CBs. And that's how it should be, I bet late last night a lot of players on our team were thinking "Holy Hell, I'm gonna have to play my *** off this training camp".
This was not the spectacular draft last years was, but man it was solid I think all the picks down to the 7th rounders have a chance to make the squad or PS. That's a great thing.
Oh, and one last comment, we have also upgraded our ST units as well, everyone except Taco and Awuzie should be playing on special teams this year.

overall i liked the whole draft, top to bottom. I would have liked to see a speedster DE brought in, maybe we have one, i dont know, but thats "want" over what they did when they were at said position and what Dallas did was much better than what i wanted. So, top to bottom, even if it doesnt pan out, im glad to see a great draft.

What happens on the field and what Dallas does is another story, but for the draft, A plus all around. Stuck to their guns and got team needs at each pick.

Right, he had something like 11 fumbles in college. Not sure if that is a total, or from last year. Hope it's a total, but still high.
However, Lucky had his fumble issues also, and reduced those as he cam along with more playing time.
Stats say Switzer had 1 fumble in 2016.

Thanks, I didn't look it up, I should have.
I was going by what they said on The Ticket right after he was drafted. Or maybe it was the draft show. To

Paea would be the guy at risk IMO if a guy like Carrell shows he can hadle 10-15 snaps at 1T in base defense.

I think Paea is safe. He saw his best years under Rod in Chicago. I believe Thornton is going to be the odd man out

One of the Cowboys themes in recent years is to find players that drop in the draft because the way they were used in college didn't showcase their best skills.

M. Collins and Tapper both fit that definitely last year.

This year Ivie and Carrell seem to fit that category this year. Carrell was a 3-4 DE and run contain was his primary job. He did have 5.5 sacks, but it appeared that having the DEs rush the passer was an afterthought in that defense. The DL took on the OL and free up the OLBs.

Even Taco was limited by the scheme. The Michigan DEs were really focused on outside run contain including QB contain.

Whining....Switzer, though I like the pick after I thought about it, but it depends on how they use him. From comments from Jason, he may not be used entirely in the Dunbar role. So I am in a wait and see approach

.

What's the "Dunbar role"? The inferior pet cat player who takes snaps away from the superstar? Let's hope that's not Switzer's role? In fact, lets hope they just abolish that role.

Actually when Jason was asked thos question if Switzer would get these plays as Dunbar did. Jason said he is a WR, and certainly could get those type of plays, but he's not a RB, so they would prefer a RB to get those plays.
Whatever that means, who knows.
But I agree, those plays need to be revamped, as in discarded and find news plays to these players strengths.
I think Linehan can do that.

Switzer is the best player in the draft class. Just wait to he is on the field and you will see.
I think he has a chance to make an immediate impact in the return game. He can back up cole and I'm sure they will find other roles for him. If he can block he can send lucky home

and no one should be celebrating the addition of nick hayden-like players.
OH RLY?

I didn't mean guys like Lewis and Taco won't produce. I think this class can be as good or better then last year

Whoa, turn that guitar down. Last years class was a sea change for the team. I can only hope your right but ....

What players are your winners and what players are your Whiners (who or what are you whining about)

Winners....Charlton, Awuzie, Lewis, Woods, Brown

As for Ivie, Carrell, White, I do not know, will need to wait and see.
I will be excited if three players show ability.

I like all of the players they drafted.

There were a few players that I might have considered instead, but nothing really significant.

Switzer's top value is as a punt returner. They never completely trusted Lucky in that role as evidenced by them using Beasley there in situations where ball security was super critical.

On offense, they wanted to limit the snaps played by the starters. The snaps that Lucky played on offense will go to Switzer. Also, the snaps where Dunbar played WR will also likely go to Switzer.

Finally, they needed a backup for Beasley. When you make Beasley an integral part of the game plan, then it's critical to have a good backup.

In regards to backups, I find it funny that people think the need for a backup RB is lower now that they have Zeke. In reality, if they are making the running game a bigger focus of the offense than in some past years, then having a backup RB is actually more important.

You could have Beasley and Switzer on the field at the same time. More and more this offense is making me think of NE. The sum of the parts are greater than the whole. Lot's of interchangeable parts. The obvious exception would be Zeke IMO.

He could be really productive for us. 4 receiver sets could be a night mare for teams
4 WR sets. Not going empty with Witten on the field. It's time for Witten to see some snaps off this year and Switzer gives them a player worth doing that for. It will benefit everyone. Keeps Witten more fresh and healthy, helps Switzer get some extra snaps and makes the offense more explosive.
