Wisconsin center Bill Nagy becomes the second-best lineman drafted in this class.

There's something I hadn't considered, moving Gurode out to guard and dropping in Costa or Nagy. Hmm.

Been there, done that. Didn't work. I vote we leave well enough alone. Besides, Nagy played guard in college too. If he's that good, just put him at guard. Game day actives become: Free, Kosier, Gurode, Nagy, Smith, Young and Holland. If Gurode gets hurt, Nagy moves to C and Holland takes the RG spot.

What part of Gurode's missed snap counts and bad snaps did you miss last year.

Gurode is a less than average center, who continues to get Pro Bowl votes based on memory and voter inertia. His increasing difficulty in making easy-to-handle snaps as he gets older is one of our issues JJ and HH are seeming to address w/ this draft, he was a very good run blocking G in college.

Don't be surprised if a total OL shake up shows up around mid-August.Our troubles in punching it in on the goalline last years are being pinned on MBIII but they are more profound than that and the draft was full of fingerprints to possible solutions.

Nagy has a ways to go...let's remember that he was only a few slots from not being drafted at all by anyone.

I'll be impressed if he even makes the team by showing that he's currently better than some guys who have a year under their belts in the NFL. Starting is probably a ways down the road.

I'll be beyond thrilled if Arkin is able to even be a legit backup this year.

My guess is Kosier and Davis start with Holland as the backup on both sides.

That doesn't mean those were not two good draft selections...it just means they will hopefully develop into starters...I don't see either of them unseating anyone at any position on our starting OL as rookies, unless we just can't afford to resign someone.

None.

You're obviously confusing statement that Gurode has failed miserably at guard in the past with opinion that he's a long-term All Pro solution at center. The fact is, Gurode had all but played himself off the roster at guard when Parcells was hired and moved him back to the pivot.

Gurode probably has two years left, and I question the wisdom of moving him to a position that he's already demonstrated an inability to play. I understand the skeptics who see Gurode as less than a Pro Bowl performer, but I didn't see a better center in the NFC in 2010, except maybe Ryan Kalil.

Gurode may not be the headiest C in the NFL, but he's one of the few you can let handle NT's 1 on 1.

Is Gurode a great center? No. But he is not a poor or even below average center. He is almost certainly a top 10 center in the NFL. The bad shotgun snaps only happen very occasionally any more. He has had only a very few wrong snaps and most of them were probably not his fault. He is a victim of Cowboy fans who are both ignorant of real football and just like to hate. There are very few centers in the NFL that can handle any NT one on one like Gurode can. Now once again for those without memories or newbie fans, Gurode WAS a below average Guard. Why in the world would anyone think he can be better now?

Considering he makes the probowl every yr, I'd say this is a pretty lame statement. And he doesnt make it because the fans are putting him there.

I'll preface my comments with the disclaimer that our running game woes may have something to do with Wade's crazy aversion to contact when practicing the running game,,, maybe Gurode gets better this year.

but

Bottom line is that Gurode makes far too many mistakes. Sure, he can physically get the job done, makes some real nice blocks on occasion, but he is unable to maintain a necessary baseline of solid center play. He's like the casino slot machines, paying out a little here and there but in the end you've lost more than you won.

Good take.

Why don't we wait and see what the kids got before making any judgments. I prefer to be optimistic about him but that's just me.

Ummm, maybe he didn't play in those 4 games.

He played OL and you wouldn't see him stick out most likely unless he did something wrong like get beat for a sack or something. So, more then likely your statement is a good thing.. :D

[Mike] Tice [Bears o-line coach], as well as Steelers’ offensive line coach Sean Kugler, took Carimi, Moffitt and Nagy aside to get a closer look during some cone drills

I see we're still in that honeymoon period where everyone believes we just drafted 8 NFL starters.

Nagy was the odd-man-out for the deepest offensive line in the country. He had a shot to win a starting job at right guard heading into the season but lost out to Kevin Zeitler — one of the top interior lineman in the Big Ten. And as for the center position? Some scouts say Peter Konz was the best O-lineman the Badgers had last season (including Carimi and Moffitt). Nagy wasn’t slighted. He played behind some of the best lineman in college football.

All Nagy has to do to stick is beat out Phil Costa for his backup C/G role. And Costa gave up 2 sacks in the 1.5 games he started last year – more than Kosiar did all year.
Nagy is going to force Costa to really show something because if Nagy can be a solid player that the coaches can trust to back-up Gurode the job is his.

Hell, Wisconsin’s line may have been better than ours. Yeah, Nagy’s a late rounder, and he may get lost in the shuffle, or he might fight, scratch, and claw his way onto the team. For a player taken as late as he was, he gives you as much of a chance as possible to make the team
