I agree.

Jerry owes banks hundreds of millions of dollars. He doesn't have other income streams like Dan Snyder does. This must put a crimp on team expenditures for at least 2 years.

Which means that while Jerry won't turn the tap off completely, he very likely won't be spending huge on big name FA's. He will be more of a mid range FA buyer. Kind of like the Sensabaugh pick up. Which is a good thing actually. We have all seen what Snyder and his fantasy football attitude has brought to D.C. And we don't want any part of that.

don't forget we have a list of our own free agents to deal with...

DeMarcus Ware
Marcus Spears
Miles Austin
Gerald Sensabaugh
Jason Hatcher
Sam Hurd
Stephen Bowen
Pat Watkins
Montrae Holland
Duke Preston
Pat McQuistan
Cory Procter

some websites are showing Jon Kitna as a potential free agent but I could have sworn we signed him to a 3-year extension after the trade.
I see us re-signing Ware, Austin, Sensabaugh, Bowen, and maybe Spears.

The bolded ones are the only ones worth trying to keep and Hatcher and Bowen are questionable.

I agree, there are a lot of players on that list I wish to be gone. I listed them because their departure means they must be replaced. We only have 6 draft picks in 2010.

Knowing Jerry we'll end up drafting 12 players

How so? The NFL survived for how long till the cap was started

You already have teams with MILLIONS to spare in cap room, removing the cap pretty much means they are outbid and are spending a smaller fraction of what other teams are.

I hope they do not go without a cap. I think it would be a bad move.

I don't know what is going to happen to the cap,but I bet it will be interesting to say the least. It seems that some teams from both sides of the fence would like to see that cap gone. Some owners don't like to be required to spend the minimum amount of money required by the cap.I don't know what the current minimum payroll amount is at this time.On the flip side you have some owners with deep pockets that don't like the current restrictions imposed by the cap.Between the tug of war between the owners and players union and the war brewing between owners about revenue sharing it could prove to be an interesting battle.

I agree, but if we're going to make a run, it's gotta be 2010. Jerry hasn't opened the wallet in free agency since 2005 because of the cap. Without a cap, there's nothing stopping Jerry lol

Uhh....

Leonard Davis....Terrell Owens....Ken Hamlin....those were all FA pick ups that cost us big money at one point or another. Davis cost us money right away, Hamlin after 1 year, and Owens got big money from us as well.

Not to mention the money we spent keeping all our own FA, or potential FA, like Newman, Ratliff, Romo, and Barber.

I don't think there is any dust settling on Jerry's wallet when it's come to FA.

I'm talking about when he went absolutely crazy signing overpriced players like Marco Rivera, Drew Bledsoe, Anthony Henry and Jason Ferguson. He dished out so much money that year going into the 05' season.

Since then he really hasn't gone wild in free agency. In 06' we did sign T.O., but other than that he signed bargain players like Kyle Kosier and Akin Ayodele. In 07' we got a great year out of Hamlin but then Jerry overpaid for him out of desperation. But in terms of one offseason, Jerry has stayed pretty quiet with FA.

Ahhh, gotcha. Actually I'd prefer he doesn't just go crazy just signing high priced guys for the sake of doing it. There are some guys out there I wouldn't mind having, at all, but I wouldn't go nuts trying to get every one of them.

I agree with ya 100%. IMO the only players who have earned their contracts in FA are Kosier and Bigg.

If there's no salary cap in 2010, that also means that they'll be no minimun, either.

With that said, I see more teams going cheap in 201 or unloading bloated salaries that I do emptying the coffers to sign free agents.

I really don't see Jerry Jones (and, as others have said, he's deep into the stadium) handing out big money for free agents next season.

Name your top 3 positions you would like to address in free agency for the Cowboys and your #1 player of choice at that position. I know it's early to be thinking about it but it's also a very distinct, possibility with the type of owner/GM that we have. Okay, so here it goes.

#1 priority is Left Tackle: release Flozell Adams and sign Marcus McNeil

#2 priority is Safety: release Ken Hamlin and sign Antoine Bethea

#3 priority is Wide Receiver: let Sam Hurd go in FA and sign Steve Breaston

Other priority is Defensive Line: possibly sign DT Fred Robbins

Also, I hate to tell you this, but if 2010 is uncapped, McNeil, Bethea and Breaston ARE NOT Free Agents.

See, if 2010 is uncapped, a player must have 6 years, not 4, to be an unrestricted free agent.

I would take:
WR
Kevin Walter
Steve Breaston
Lee Evans
Brandon Marshall (?)

LB
D'Qwell Jackson
DeMeco Ryans

FS
Antoine Bethea
Darren Sharper

Some of these could help because of their veteran leadership.

Will all of those guys become free agents if it is an uncapped year in 2010? They may be free agents if a new CBA is reached, but if not then there are clauses that will keep many players from becoming free agents as scheduled. I don't know which particular players that effects, but I heard that was one of the things that would happen if a new CBA is not reached.

I was slow in typing my question. Thanks for the info.

Sharper and Evans would be the only two out of that group, who would be unrestricted free agents if 2010 is uncapped.
