Byrd got a monster signing bonus paired with a minimum first year salary. Cap numbers on the deal will explode over time. Won't be worth it even if he is playing safety at a HOF level.

6/54m with 28m guaranteed is pretty steep. Cap hit could be as little as 4m this year though.

Cowboys have Tyron Smith and Dez Bryant to pay. They can't be making monster deals like that to the safety position.

The safety position is probably the most important position on the defense. We've had monster contracts at WR and OL. Where did it take us? What have we not had since the days of a feared defense? What have we been needing for almost two decades??? A safety!!!

This is how I broke down Byrd's proposed contract. Was only off by about 4m, that would add about 1m to each year 3-6:
If they want to sign Byrd, here is a way to make it work. Give him 6yr/50m with 15m signing bonus and 24m guaranteed.

Well, if I am Jimmy Graham, I'm not accepting any less than Byrd. Good luck trying to work that into a tight cap. It can be done but someone has to pay the price.
